Update: Evacuations lifted, SR-163 reopened after gas leak in Mission Valley

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — 8:00 p.m. —  All lanes of the SR-163 were reopened Wednesday night and authorities lifted hours-long evacuation orders after construction crews cut through a 20-inch-diameter gas line in Mission Valley.

SDG&E tweeted the gas leak had been contained and crews were working to fix the damaged line.

2:45 p.m. — Authorities Wednesday shut down both directions of a busy freeway and evacuated part of a busy shopping mall after construction crews cut through a 20-inch-diameter gas line at a Mission Valley intersection.

California Highway Patrol officers began closing state Route 163 between Interstates 8 and 805 around 11:30 a.m., about an hour after reports came in that natural gas was emanating from a severed line near the corner of Friars Road and Ulric Street.

The intersection is just west of the Friars Road exit of state Route 163.

Friars was closed through the area between the Fashion Valley Mall and Frazee Road. Closures were expected to last about five hours, said Sgt. Robert Hawkins of the San Diego Police Department.

Police were also evacuating nearby businesses, including some in the mall.

San Diego Gas and Electric spokeswoman Allison Torres said crews immediately responded to the scene of the gas leak after it was reported.

“They’ve been out there since right after the call came in,” she said. “First responders and our crews are out there making sure there area’s safe.”

San Diego Police have issued evacuation orders due to the gas leak in the area of Ulric and Friars Road at 2:20 p.m. A temporary evacuation point has been established for gas leak evacuation. Residents can evacuate to the Temporary Evacuation Point at 5905 Friars Road.

The following roads are closed:

  • NB and SB 163 between I-8 and Genesee and
  • eastbound and westbound Friars between Frazee and Fashion Valley.

If you need emergency assistance in evacuating, call 9-1-1. Below is the map of the evacuation area.

In response to the gas leak affecting parts of Mission Valley, American Red Cross disaster workers will support two temporary evacuation points:

Riverwalk Golf Course (In the Riverwalk Golf Course parking lot)

  • 1150 Fashion Valley Rd, San Diego, CA 92108
