Out With A Bang!
The 92-year-old Hotel San Diego keeps a date with dynamite.
The city's namesake hotel was demolished just after 8:00am on April 15th. To prepare for the implosion, crews drilled about 900 holes in the seven-story structure and stuffed them with 200 pounds of explosives. The hotel, built in 1914 by John D. Spreckels, was demolished so a 22-story tower for the U.S. District Court can be built on Broadway between Union and State streets. The new annex is scheduled for completion in 2010.
