Stephanie Thompson had the good fortune of meeting her personal hero, Paul Rudy, while in college 8 years ago. Following lengthy contract negotiations, Stephanie became a lowly intern in the KUSI sports department. After battling her way up the ranks, she joined the PPR team in 2003 and has never looked back. This season marks her seventh year on the PPR, and her fourth as East County Game of the Week Reporter.
In addition to her duties in the East County, Stephanie is also in charge of coordinating the most prestigious event of the year, the Silver Pigskin Gala. A seat at the gala has become one of the most sought after tickets in all of San Diego – with last year’s event drawing more than 400 local athletes, coaches and fans! “That final night, at the Gala, is one of the main reasons I love the PPR. To see the excitement on the faces of the players and their families – it makes it all worth it!”
When she isn’t proudly wearing her red jacket in the East County, Stephanie enjoys a variety of other equally impressive activities. Current passions include ice blocking, co-ed softball and karaoke. Stephanie lives in Poway with her husband, Adam, their anxious dog, Bala, and ferocious attack cat, Shyne.
Why do you choose to be involved in the PPR?: “Being involved in the PPR has been an incredible experience, and I always think of how lucky I am to be a part of such a great show! Nothing beats the excitement on a player’s face during his post game interview – when he knows that everyone in San Diego is going to get to see his great play on the PPR. I also love being able to go to games every Friday and get a chance to talk with fans about how much they like our show, and how great it was to see their kid on the PPR the previous week. Overall, I can’t imagine San Diegohigh school football without the PPR. It has really brought the community together on Friday nights, and I am honored to be a part of that."
What is it like working with a broadcast icon like Paul Rudy?: “I get this question at least once every Friday night! Here is my response: have you ever gone swimming with sharks? The entire time you can’t help thinking what an amazing experience it is, but in the back of your mind you are hoping that one doesn’t attack you. In all honesty, working with Paul has been an honor. The PPR was his brainchild, and he puts 110% into it every season. Paul has been a great boss, mentor and friend – and I look forward to many more seasons of Pigskin together!”
