THE PPR WAS THERE... WE HAVE VIDEO PROOF
After last Friday's episode of the Prep Pigskin Report, we were archiving Escondido's Ricky Seale's record-breaking TD run for our save vault. In the process we took stock of all the other record-breaking efforts the PPR has documented in its 11-year history. The list you're about to read contains just the ones we could find in our rather shoddy archive system. I'm sure with a couple weeks and a certified public accountant we could find even more, but for now check this out:
Last Friday we aired the run that gave Seale the all-time section rushing record. He broke the mark held by former University High star Demetrius Sumler. We have video of Sumler's record-breaking rush in 2005. Sumler broke the record previously set by Uni alumnus Justin Green in 2000. We have Justin's record-breaking rush attempt, too!
Last year we showed you Cathedral High's Tyler Gaffney's record-breaking touchdown, and the rush attempt that gave him the single-season rushing record.
In the same year, we documented Scripps Ranch's Brennan Clay as he became the first San Diego athlete to break the 1,000-yard barrier in both rushing and receiving.
In 2005, PPR cameras were rolling when El Cajon Valley's Abraham Muheize set a single-season record for most yards from scrimmage. Running the spread offense, Muheize piled up 5,203 yards on his way to winning the prestigious Silver Pigskin.
Back in 2003, we were at every Marion Catholic game when the Crusaders set a single-season points record, averaging 54.8 points per game.
Want more records from 2003? PPR cameras captured Escondido's Darrick Jackson when he set the 11-man record for most rushing yards in a single game. Jackson piling up 410 yards and 7 touchdowns against Hilltop.
How about some receiving records? Earlier this season we photographed all 14 of Victor Dean's catches against Mission Bay. The Lincoln High receiver setting a single-game record with 329 receiving yards.
We even found video of D.J. Busch's 44th TD pass back in 1999. The Santana senior still holds the section record for most touchdown passes in a season.
Like I said, this is the video we could find on a cursory search of our save vault. I'm sure with time and some organizational help we could find even more. The point I am trying to make is in the 11-year history of the PPR we have documented some of the greatest performers and performances the county has ever known. It's been an honor to be the "video custodian" and it is a role we look forward to building on in the years to come.
Bottom line, when it comes to high school football, the PPR is San Diego's pigskin time capsule!
