Friday was a day of dramatic contrast. The predicted heavy May Gray cloud layer hung on all day in the coastal area from Del Mar southward and as far as North Park and East Lake.
But north of Del Mar, even the beaches turned sunny and nice early in the day. The same was true for the inland balance of the county. So except for some gusty winds in the mountains things were generally very nice.
The May Gray will diminish considerably over the weekend and the weather will be essentially sunny and warm; particularly nice for May.
Sunday will also be a big day for another reason; there will be a partial solar eclipse viewable from here in San Diego. It will start about 5:37 PM in the afternoon and reach 82 percent (the Moon will block out our view of 82 percent of the surface of the Sun) about 6:40 PM and end just about at sunset. This will be what is known as an annular eclipse, when the Moon is not close enough to be big enough in the sky to totally block the Sun. Along a line from Lubbock, Texas to Chico, California the Moon will cover the entire surface of the sun except for a narrow ring (it will result in a ring of fire view). It will be a 99% eclipse along that line. I will be showing a map and an animation of the eclipse on my weathercasts. BUT PLEASE UNDERSTAND, YOU COULD DAMAGE YOUR VISION PERMANENTLY BY LOOKING AT THE SUN WITHOUT A STRONG FILTER. SUNGLASSES ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH. There will be some limited number of eclipse glasses for sale (2 bucks a pair) at a kite and eclipse party at Mission Bay Park Sunday afternoon. There are also eclipse glasses for sale at the gift shop of the Rubin Fleet Museum in Balboa Park and Oceanside Photo and Telescope on Mission Avenue, just west of I-5 (kitty corner from the high school). There may be other places to buy them, but that is all I know of.
