SAN DIEGO (KUSI) - Recent polling in San Diego shows most people support a new stadium in San Diego.

The findings were based on results of polling 402 randomly selected likely voters in San Diego.

When asked if they would approve a roughly $1 billion stadium, where about two-thirds would be paid by the NFL, the Chargers and corporate sponsors and one one-third by city and county government.

Here's how the number broke down.

  • 51 percent favor it
  • 41 percent oppose it

So about as many who express strong support express strong opposition.

In another question, 62 percent believe losing the San Diego Chargers to Los Angeles would be a bad thing for the city and only 5 percent see losing the team as a good thing.

Researchers said this poll models a 50 percent voter turnout. They also note a 95 percent confidence level with a maximum margin of error at 4.9 percent.

"There's a margin of error, we also replicated a 50 percent turnout level a portion of that may or may not happen we could blow past that we could ave less than that, it's all an estimate at this point. The other thing is this is a snapshot in time this was done in late June. We're gonna get to a situation where if we get to the ballot ... Don't know exactly how things will turn out," said John Nienstedt from Competitive Edge Research and Communication.

Also based on this research, clarifying that the stadium would be built without a tax increase would significantly help the ballot measure's prospects.

An overwhelming 62 percent offered that they are more inclined to vote 'yes' based on the absence of a tax increase.
