SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — The San Diego Chargers and the NFL are getting ready to bring the blitz when the team starts its signature drive in hopes of a new stadium.

The kickoff event will feature team owner Dean Spanos, Quarterback Philip Rivers, Ladainian Tomlinson and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

Mayor Kevin Faulconer said the drive is a positive step forward for all parties.

"I think it's an opportunity for San Diegans to get their voices heard  and from the city's standpoint, we're vetting the proposal, doing our due diligence,  running all of the numbers and really looking at benefits, risks  and doing all the things we should be doing right now," Mayor Faulconer said.

In the meantime, a competitive initiative, authored by Attorney Corey Briggs, is also moving forward.

That group said it feels confident the voters will support its plan.

Bill Johnston, Director of Public Relations for the Chargers, sat down with KUSI with more.
