Chargers holding Pokemon Go promotion for FanFest

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — With their long-term future in San Diego still in doubt, the Chargers will hold their annual FanFest this morning to allow fans to watch practice and take part in activities at Qualcomm Stadium. The Chargers qualified an initiative for the November ballot that would provide funding for construction of a downtown stadium and convention center annex, but many observers believe that a likely two-thirds threshold needed for approval could be too steep a hill to climb.

There is also a chance the initiative will only require a simple majority to pass, depending on the outcome of litigation in a case elsewhere in California.

The initiative was endorsed by the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce last week, but it's opposed by many in the tourism industry and some leading politicians. Mayor Kevin Faulconer has not taken a stand.

It's unclear what the Chargers would do if the initiative fails, but they do have an option to become the second team at a future National Football League stadium in Inglewood, near Los Angeles International Airport, along with the Los Angeles Rams.

Football-related events at the FanFest are set to begin at 9:30 a.m. with appearances by former players Luis Castillo, Stephen Cooper, Raylee Johnson, Darren Carrington, Billy Ray Smith and Ed White. The Chargers Girls will follow with their 2016 debut performance, and the team will conduct a full-pads team practice.

In non-football activity, Pokemon Go enthusiasts can chase virtual characters in the lower concourse and outside ticket gate areas beginning at 9 a.m. Admission and parking are free, according to the Chargers. Merchandise and food will be available for purchase in the stadium.
