Joey Bosa rejects 'best offer' from Chargers, team says

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — The San Diego Chargers have made what appears to be their best offer to third overall pick Joey Bosa, but the franchise remains unable to end what's become an ugly contract dispute. Bosa remains as the only rookie draft pick of the 2016 class to be unsigned. The Chargers and Bosa's representatives have taken issue with "offset language" and signing bonus deferment.

The Chargers released a statement to media stating their discussions with Bosa's representatives have been "both fair and structurally sound." Bosa's holdout is the longest since Michael Crabtree's holdout in 2009.

The team says it will proceed to restructure their offer to Bosa, but the contract value will be lower. Bosa has not reported to training camp or team functions since Jun. 14. He's missed two preseason games, with a third on the horizon on Aug. 28.

"The offer that we extended was for Joey to contribute during all 16 games and beyond. Joey’s ability to contribute for an entire rookie season has now been jeopardized by the valuable time he has missed with his coaches and his teammates," the statement said. "Since Joey will not report at this time, his ability to produce not just early in the season, but throughout the entire season, has been negatively impacted."

The Chargers' final preseason game is Sep. 1, with the season opening on Sep. 11 in Kansas City.
