SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — The San Diego-based charity International Relief Teams is helping victims of Hurricane Matthew in Haiti by sending relief aid to the island nation, a spokeswoman said.

Hurricane Matthew has been especially unkind to the country of Haiti, where the death toll continues to climb.

But for the Haitian people, help is on the way, courtesy of a San Diego-based relief organization.

As Hurricane Matthew leaves his soggy footprint across Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, they begin to bury their dead, estimated at close to 300.

The numbers are staggering as far as the havoc wreaked by Matthew and a satellite image of the storm is as eerie as it gets.

As estimated 28,000 homes are damaged, leaving 350,000 Haitians in need of immediate aid and a prediction that because of such unsanitary conditions, cholera cases will reach the hundred thousand figures in the coming days.

But as the Haitian people suffer, little do they know that help is coming their way.

The San Diego-based relief organization, International Relief Teams is sending $7 million worth of medical supplies to Haiti.

The shipment includes critical medicines such as antibiotics and analgesics to treat immediate medical emergencies and oral rehydration salts in preparation for a potential cholera outbreak, according to Montgomery.

But the fact is as Haiti gets hammered by Hurricane Matthew, this is a country still recovering from an earthquake six years ago that killed over 200,000 people.

And sadly, the death toll is expected to rise over the next few days.
