SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — Two important measures are on the ballot in November, Prop 62 and 66, which both deal with the death penalty.

California is currently one of 30 states where the death penalty is legal.

Prop 62 would repeal the death penalty and replace the maximum sentence for murder with life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Those in favor of the measure include:

  • The California Democratic Party
  • The Libertarian Party of California
  • California Peace and Freedom Party
  • Harvey Milk LGBT Democratic Club

Some argue Prop 62 would protect the worst of criminals and cost tax payers millions of dollars.

Those against it include:

  • California Republican Party
  • Bonnie Dumanis, San Diego District Attorney
  • San Diego Police Officers Association
  • California Statewide Law Enforcement Association

Prop 66 aims to keep the death penalty, but changes the way inmates can appeal their death sentence. It sets a time limit for appeals and makes the original trial judge take the case back first before going to the supreme court.

Those in favor of the measure include:

  • California Republican Party
  • Bonnie Dumanis, San Diego District Attorney
  • California District Attorneys Association
  • San Diego Police Officers Association

Some believe keeping the death penalty increases the chance of executing an innocent person, those opponents include:

  • The California Democratic Party
  • The Libertarian Party of California
  • California Peace and Freedom Party
  • Harvey Milk LGBT Democratic Club

Prop 66 and 62 are what they call "non-compatible measures." This means if both win, the proposition with the most "yes" votes overrides the other.
