SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — The city attorney and the city's 14 regulated medical marijuana dispensaries are teaming up. They want medical marijuana users to only patronize the law-abiding clinics.

Hard to believe, but the local weekly, San Diego Reader, with all of its medical marijuana dispensary ads in the back, was part of a news conference involving City Attorney Jan Goldsmith and representatives of the city's 14 regulated medical marijuana clinics, eight of which are currently operating.

The city attorney and the lawful dispensaries, under the umbrella of the United Medical Marijuana Coalition are touting a new advertising campaign, which includes a full page ad in the the Reader.

Goldsmith characterizes the other clinics, operating outside the law at fly-by-night, cash operations that are dangerous on two fronts, the risk to the personal safety of the customer and the lack of control over what that customer is smoking or ingesting.

Goldsmith cited the presence of felons, illegal weapons and other drugs. Coalition Executive Director Phil Rath said the advertising campaign will include a number of publications, including those online.

"Regulations are there for a reason and to create a safe environment for customers and the community in which our marijuana clinics operate," Goldsmith said.
