Mt. Carmel Sun Devils 24, Del Norte Night Hawks 14
Week 9 brought us a showdown between the Mt. Carmel Sun Devils (4-3) and the Del Norte Nighthawks (4-3). The Sun Devils managed to defeat the hosting Nighthawks, 24-14.
All of the action happened during the first and fourth quarter. Early in the first, Mt. Carmel’s Ruben Flowers rushed the ball for a 48 yard touchdown. It didn’t take long for Del Norte to answer back with some points of their own. Nighthawks’ running-back Will Carpenter racked up some yards by completing a 71 yard rushing touchdown.
A few seconds were left in the first quarter when Del Norte was setting up for a punt. Mt. Carmel’s Quoi Ellis received the ball and returned it to the end-zone for a total of 65 yards. The Sun Devils broke the tie with that amazing punt return, 14-7.
It’s important to point out that both teams were having trouble executing offensive plays. On the other hand, their defenses carried the game for the entire second and third quarter. We didn’t see a touchdown until the 4th.
After a solid drive, Mt. Carmel’s Brandon Hernandez punched in a 15 yard rushing touchdown for another 7 points. In the very next drive, Del Norte replied with a massive play. Del Norte’s Jake Moore passed to D’angelo Gunter for an 80 yard touchdown to close the gap by 7 points, 21-24 Mt. Carmel. The Sun Devils hammered the last nail into the coffin when Ethan Albertson completed a 31 yard field goal for their last 3 points, 24-14.

As the regular season comes to an end, the Del Norte Nighthawks will host the Mt. Carmel Sun Devils in one of their last home games. Both teams share the same record, 4-3. Friday’s game will decide which team will be more likely head into playoffs with a winning record, and most importantly, a high morale.
The season for both teams are fairly similar. The Nighthawks and the Sun Devils caught a stride in the beginning of the season but reached a drought around Week 5.
Mt. Carmel started the season with 4 wins, until they suffered at losing streak beginning with the Rancho Bernardo Broncos in Week 5. Last week’s game against the Ramona Bulldogs ended in heartbreak for the Sun Devils. They lost by a margin of 3 points, 34-31. The close game will definitely fire up Mt. Carmel for their game Friday.
Del Norte will be celebrating staff appreciation night. A victory over Mt. Carmel will be the best way to thank the Nighthawk faculty. Del Norte plans to execute by unleashing their aerial offense. Although quarterback Jake Moore has a variety of capable receivers, look out for Anthony Ullrich and Ty Anderson. Ullrich and Anderson have both achieved over 300 receiving yards and average at about 20 yards per reception.
