Escondido Cycle Center North County Game of the Week: La Costa Canyon Mavericks 38, San Marcos Knights 21

Posted: Updated:

The La Costa Canyon Mavericks (5-3, 3-1) defense and two quarterback rotation was too much for the San Marcos Knights (5-3, 2-3) in a 38-21 win in the Escondido Cycle Center North County Game of the week on Friday night at LCC.

This one was a one score game late into the 4th quarter when Josh Bornes scored from two yards out to cut the Mavericks lead to 24-21.  The Knights got the ball back, but were forced to punt, and a high snap over the head of the punter Bornes gave LCC a short field. the Knights forced a 4th and long, and the then came the play of the game, when quarterback Jake Neufeld under pressure found Zach Goodkin who made an incredible catch in double coverage for the 1st down.

Two plays later back up quarterback Tanner Clark extended the lead to 31-21 on a nine yard keeper. The Mavericks would add another late score on Christian Estrella Pick 6.

Next Friday La Costa Canyon will travel to Oceanside (6-2, 2-2), while San Marcos will play an non-league game at Mt. Carmel (5-3, 2-3).

The Escondido Cycle Center North County Game of the Week takes us to La Costa Canyon High School. As the Mavericks (4-3, 2-1) host San Marcos (5-2, 2-2) in an Avocado League match-up.  While it is a league, it is also has implications for the “Open Division and Division 1 playoffs, with San Marcos (11) ranked slightly ahead of La Costa Canyon (13) in Division 1 in the section.

After further review, this will be the 5th match up between these two programs, and 1st since 2001, with La Costa Canyon holding a 4-0 advantage back when these two teams were both in the "Old Avocado League".

The Mavericks, who are currently Ranked, are coming off a tough 28-21 road loss at Mission Hills last Friday.  All three of their losses have come to programs all ranked in the Top 10 of San Diego County.

While San Marcos only two losses were to Oceanside and El Camino to start league play, since then, they have a double overtime road win at Torrey Pines and a convincing win over Carlsbad last Friday on homecoming.

If you are looking for players to watch, it starts with San Marcos receiver Kyle Phillips.  The junior has 5 offers so far, most recently Cal and Vanderbilt.  His quarterback Bryson Bolin is one of the best in the county putting up some great numbers 16 TD Passes in seven games, eight of those have gone to Phillips.

When you watch LCC, look no farther than Zach Goodkin who averages almost 130 yards from scrimmage per game. Quarterback Jake Neufeld balances out the running game,averaging 146 yards a game through the air.

The scoreboard operator may get carpal tunnel in this one, because it is very likely to be a high scoring affair.

Also check out the grill on the home side, their burgers are legit, 2nd only to the burgers at RBV, and that is a big compliment.
