San Pasqual Eagles 21, Rancho Buena Vista Longhorns 7
By Thomas Andrews
On a very cool night in vista with a pivotal valley league match up the San Pasqual fighting Eagles traveled out west on the 78 to face off verse the Rancho Buena Vista Longhorns. Both teams were coming off losses and were looking to get back on the winning track.
First quarter action and senior captain and quarterback Ace Roach drops to pass and intercepted by number 27 Josh Nolan and Eagles take over. They don't waste any time and they march down to the 2 yard line where Spencer Pugh bowed his shoulders and scores to give San Pasqual the early 7-0 lead. After the Eagles got the ball back quarter back Westin Erdman was intercepted by Jordan Roberts on the Longhorns to end the first quarter.
Second quarter starts slow with each team getting multiple penalties Until San Pasqual was able to strip Antonio Bowman and Eagles recovered. San Pasquals offensive coordinator Andrew Clark called a rare pass play that Westin Ederman was able to find Sam Serrato who was able to sneak out of the backfield and score from 25 yards out to add to the lead 14-0 Eagles at the half.
Third quarter starts and Eagles get the ball to start the half and get stoped on fourth down and the Longhorns take over. Rancho Buena Vista was able to put a magical drive together and finally get on the board with a 3 yard pass from Ace Roach to Antonio Bowman Longhorns still trailed 14-7.
Let's jump to the fourth quarter with the Eagles trying to run out the clock and taking a gamble going for it on 4th down and Westin would be sacked by Ian Mcanry to give the Longhorns the ball back with 3 minutes left.
Ace Roach took a beating on the night running for his life and making plays happen, as he was able to get his team down to the 10 yard line with about a minute left in the game. Roach would drop back and be stripped of the ball when #44 Justin Salaheddine is able to shovel the loose ball to Tim Hansen who takes the ball from 15 yard like and has a convoy down the sideline where he puts a stiff arm to Antonio Bowman and is able to tip toe into the end zone to seal the deal for the San Pasqual fighting Eagles.
The Eagles now move to (5-6) on the season and will host they're city rivals next week the Escondido Cougars for senior night. As for the Longhorns who now move to (2-7) they play host to the Fallbrook Warriors for senior night of their own. For all those highlights be sure to tune in to KUSI for the Prep Pigskin Report Friday nights 10:30 PM.
PREVIEW: With only two weeks left in the season and playoffs right around the corner this matchup between the San Pasqual fighting Eagles and the Rancho Buena Vista Longhorns is a pivotal Valley League game. Overall the Eagles are (4-4) and (1-1) in league, and are coming off a tough loss verse Oceanside were the team gave up 27 straight point midway through the 3rd quarter to lose 39-12. San Pasquals' lone league win was over the Fallbrook Warriors 24-10. On the opposite side the Longhorns are (2-6) and sit even with the Eagles at (1-1) in league play as they have beaten the Escondido Cougars 42-38. Rancho is coming off a tough road game at the Ramona Bulldogs were they lost 49-7.
The Fighting Eagles triple option offense will look to put up points as the Longhorns defense has given up over 300 points on the season already. Lead by senior quarterback Nick Hurst and senior running back Sam Serrato the Eagles will look to run up and down the field. With a coaching staff built with almost all alumni San Pasqual knows that is crunch time for their team if they want to try and make a playoff run.
On the other hand the Rancho Buena Vista has a had tough season like I mentioned they're defense has not helped them win any games this season but the offense can not give all the blame to the defense as it has struggled to put up points this season with only 93 points scored all season. The last three games the Longhorns have been out scored 141-21. Senior caption quarterback Ace Roach will look to change that as they play host to the Eagles and sneak in to the playoff picture.
With both teams sitting even in Valley League play be sure to tune in to the Prep Pigskin Report Friday night at 10:30 p.m. Only on KUSI.
