Tonight was the Southwest Raiders last home game, which meant reminiscing on the talented seniors on this team. The Montgomery Aztecs traveled to Southwest to face these seniors and their teammates for a league matchup. Both being 0-1 in league meant someone had to break the tie. Though the Raider seniors left their heart on the field, it was the Aztecs who would conquer and walk away with a win, 31-28.
In the first quarter, the Aztecs would get straight to business as they drove down the field and topped it off with a touchdown run by Anthony Bugarin. Raiders ball but they would fumble and it was Aztec ball once again. This time around the Aztecs will have a little fun as they attempt a hook and ladder. David Vargas would pitch it to Anthony Bugarin for the continuation making the score 14-0 over the Southwest Raiders.
In the second quarter, Southwest’s Zaire Simpson would decrease Montgomery’s lead by 3 with his 97-yard kickoff return making the score 17-14 Aztecs. Southwest would take charge of the game as they led at halftime 20-17.
Many thought the Southwest Raiders were taking this win because of their movement on each possession as well as their momentum after big stops on fourth downs. That same momentum would flow into the second half as Montgomery looked to punt but fumbled. Raiders would take over on the 5-yard line. A few plays later Raiders would lead 28-17.
Montgomery and Southwest were just causing mayhem in the second half with turnovers. Each team had at least two opportunities to put the game away and/or decrease the lead. However, Montgomery’s defense would make a stop in the fourth quarter. This led to an 8-yard touchdown run by David Vargas, 31-28 Montgomery.
Southwest gets one more shot but quarterback David Espinoza would get intercepted and the Aztecs would take over to eventually take home a win.
The matchup between the Aztecs and Raiders was definitely a war and had different game changing moments. The Aztecs would pull off a win as they prepare for Castle Park next week for the Trojans final home game of the year. Lastly, the Raiders travel along the 905 freeway to visit the San Ysidro Cougars for their final home game next week as well.
PREVIEW: It's Week 10 of the Prep Pigskin Report and this Red Jacket is headed to the South Bay. This South Bay game features the Montgomery Aztecs (1-7) heading a little further south for a conference matchup to meet the Southwest SD Raiders (2-6).
Last week in Week 9, the Aztecs were fighting strong to finish the game and this week they will have to do the same. The Aztecs bounced back on offense every series with leader Quarterback Anthony Parra. Because the Aztec offense was in no shape of backing down, this week their defense is going to have to make crucial stops to get a win under their belt. More specifically stop Southwest Raiders’ Zaire Simpson and Leonard Hoar.
For the Raiders, Simpson had 3 touchdowns last week against the Castle Park Trojans. Though it wasn’t enough to leave with a win, he is the guy to look out for. Hoar is another big running back who runs flows through those gaps. Hoar is a big threat to opponents as he runs hard and doesn’t get brought down easily. If the Aztecs can limit the yards per carry between both Simpson and Hoar, we have got ourselves a ball game.
Kickoff is set at 7p.m. at Southwest High School. Be sure to tune into the Prep Pigskin Report at 10:30p.m for highlights all over San Diego.
