SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — Measure I is the measure that could close down San Diego High School, the oldest high school in town.

If approved with a 'yes' vote, San Diego High will remain where it is, on land that's legally part of Balboa Park.

It's been there since 1882 and the land was originally dedicated park space.

A 'no' vote could force the school to close and revert the school land back to Balboa Park.

That would force almost 3,000 students to find another school. Many of them would be bussed to other parts of town. It would also cost taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars.

That's the cost to tear down the old school and eventually build a new one on different land.

This measure only requires a simply majority, 50 percent plus 1.

Supporters include:

  • Mayor Kevin Faulconer
  • The TaxpayersAdvocate.org
  • The San Diego Teachers Association
  • The San Diego High School Alumni Association

Those against this measure include:

  • The Save our Heritage Organization
  • The Balboa Park Heritage Association

Both these opponents say the land was never intended to be a school. It was supposed to be dedicated park space.

Out of all the issues on the November ballot, this is the one that would directly affect 3,000 school kids.

Even though San Diego High officials sits on land considered dedicated park space, the school was there years before any trees were planted in Balboa Park.

The core of this issue is something they call the city charter, basically the city's version of the constitution.

Under that charter, dedicated park land can only be used as park land.

In this case, the city made an exception and granted a 50-year lease to San Diego High.

That least is about to expire and the charter itself needs to be changed to keep the school.
