A defensive slug-fest from the start, Friday at Mt. Carmel proved to be the worthy match-up we thought it would be. It only took three and a half quarters.
The Sundevils would strike first, when newly appointed replacement quarterback Sean Casey took the ball on multiple keepers, finally finding paydirt from the 9-yard line to make it 7-0. San Marcos would counter when PPR Silver Pigskin Nominee Kyle Philips returned a punt 50 yards for a touchdown.
After a 4rd quarter go ahead 36 yard field goal from Myles Liss of San Marcos, the Sundevils kicked into high gear.
Mt. Carmel would find itself at the 50 yard line with 5 minutes left after a fortuitous muffed punt by the Knights. Sundevil running back Spencer Jackson would pound the ball to the Knight 36 yard line on five straight carries.
The next play Mt. Carmel decided to pull a rabbit out of the hat. Casey faked right and went left with a pitch to tailback Rueben Flowers, who in turn rolled right and tossed a prayer to Amir Batta. Batta would rumble the entire 36 yard to score the go ahead touchdown.
On San Marcos' last effort from deep in their own territory, defensive lienman Brendan Cathers intercepted the pass for a pick 6 to seal the victory.
San Marcos will host the Mission Hills Grizzlies next week in the final regular season game, while Mt. Carmel travels to play their rival Westview Wolverines. Tune into KUSI on Friday at 10:30pm for all scores and highlights!
