Friday night the Santana Sultans hosted the Mt. Miguel Matadors from Spring Valley in what could possibly be their last home game of the season, depending on the play-off picture. A buzz of excitement filled the stands as the Sultans celebrated and recognized their senior student-athletes. In what looked to be a close game right from the start, the game was all Mt. Miguel offense as a fittingly exciting game would ensue with the Matadors ultimately coming out on top, defeating Santana 47-41.
The Sultans would start out with the lead, scoring on their second drive with a five yard touchdown by senior running back Bobby Wallace. On the Matador drive to follow, junior running back Shemar Greene finds a hole in the defensive line, sprinting down the field for a 67 yard touchdown. With the score tied 7-7, the Matadors would break the draw with Shemar Greene once again breaking out of the line of Sultan defenders and finding the endzone, bringing the score to 14-7 where the Sultans would continue to trail behind Mt. Miguel for the duration of the game. Before the quarter would end a long-bomb pass from Matador quarterback Benny Valdez that would find wide receiver Richard Moore and stop 1 yard short of the end zone. Scoring on the very next play, the score at the quarter, 21-7.
At the start of the second quarter, Shamar Greene breaks multiple defenders bounding a long 68 yards into the endzone. After a Sultan attempt to make their way down the field, Santana’s Timmy Tischler would kick one through the uprights, putting the only points on the board for the Sultans in the quarter. Score, 28-10.
Mt. Miguel and Santana would continue to trade punches in the duration of the game, resulting in a 47-41 victory.
