Posted: Updated:

The Chick-Fil-A Game of the Week took us to San Marcos where the Knights (6-4) hosted Mission Hills (6-4) for the Discovery Bowl. After 11 straight losses to rival Mission Hills, San Marcos finally won a Discovery Bowl game 14-10.

It was San Marcos senior night, and all the seniors were honored before the game with their families on the field. Both side of the field were packed with fans. San Marcos had a white out and Mission Hills went with the blackout. There were even 5 Chick-Fil-A cows in attendance for the Discovery Bowl.

The night began with Mission Hills scoring first after Samuel Dixon scored a 14-yard touchdown. The PAT kick by Eric Cavataio was good, and brought the score 7-0.

Later in the first quarter, Cavataio kicked a 34-yard field goal and put Mission Hills in the lead 10-0.

San Marcos answered right back when quarterback Bryson Bolin threw a 62-yard pass to Kyle Philips for a touchdown to change the score 10-7 Mission Hills. The first half ended with San Marcos down by three.

Both teams came out at the end of half time fired up and ready to go. The Mission Hills student section switched it up during halftime and changed out of their black and into neon, hoping this would give the team momentum to keep the lead and win another Discovery Bowl.

That wasn’t the case. Both the Grizzlies’ and the Knight’s defense were on top of their game tonight. They both stopped the offense, forced fumbled and had a couple of sacs. They didn’t let one another score, until the 4th quarter of the game.

Bolin handed the ball off to Josh Bornes for a 24 yard run. The knights slowly got the ball down to the 5-yard line. That’s when Bolin threw a 5-yard pass to Bornes for the game-winning touchdown. The PAT was good and the Knights won their first Discovery Bowl game 14-10.

The win for the Knights ruined the chance for the Mission Hills Grizzlies to tie for an Avocado League championship. This week ended the last regular season game. Play offs start next week.

PREVIEW: The Chick-Fil-A Game of the Week takes us to San Marcos where the Knights (5-4, 2-3) will host The Mission Hills Grizzlies (6-3, 4-1) in the Avocado League. Both teams will play their final regular season game against each other in the Discovery Bowl.

Mission Hills tries to rebound after a tough loss against Torrey Pines 33-14. This was their first loss in the Avocado League play. Despite the loss, the Grizzlies move to No. 2 in the San Diego CIF Power Rankings.

The Grizzlies enter into Week 10 of The Prep Pigskin Report with victories over top-ranked Oceanside and La Costa Canyon and losses against Rancho Bernardo and Mater Dei.

Jack Tuttle will lead the Grizzlies’ offense in the Discovery Bowl. Tuttle’s main target is senior wide receiver Christian Esqueda. When Tuttle and the Grizzlies look to run the ball, they turn to junior running back Samuel Dixon. Dixon has the speed and the power to damage the Knight’s hard-hitting defense.

The Grizzlies are looking to take the Avocado League title. If Mission Hills and Torrey Pines both win this week, they will share the title. If a loss by either team with a win by the other, there will be a winner for the newly formed Avocado League Title.

As for the home team, The San Marcos Knights are coming off a loss against Mt. Carmel 21-10. The Knights have victories over top-ranked Torrey Pines and Carlsbad, with losses against Oceanside and La Costa Canyon.

San Marcos is known to have an offense that can score and put points on the board early. Their offense is lead by senior quarterback Bryson Bolin, who is seen to be one of the biggest weapons for the Knights this season. He throws accurate and fast passes to his receivers that move the ball quickly down the field.

Bolin’s main receivers are Kyle Philips, Tylee Hodson and Drew Morgan. Philips has 657 receiving yards, and 8 touchdowns. Hodson has 328 receiving yards and two touchdowns, while Morgan has 292 and one touchdown. Dual threat Tyler Rogers is a huge playmaker for the Knights. He leads the running game with his blazing speed and quickness. He has 93 carries for 463 yards, and 8 touchdowns. He is also a leader defensively with 16 tackles and one interception.

The Grizzlies offense will have a tough night against the Knights biggest defensive threat Josh Bornes who has 88 total tackles and 4.5 sacks. One corner, beside Rogers, to watch out for is Ethan Cline with 32 tackles and 2 interceptions.

The Knights move to No. 13 in the San Diego CIF Power Rankings.
