Santa Fe Christian Eagles 49, La Jolla Country Day Torreys 21

As the 2016 regular season comes to a close for football, the excitement of playoffs lies just around the corner. In their last regular season game, the La Jolla Country Day Torreys played the Santa Fe Christian Eagles on the Eagles senior night. The Eagle’s seniors definitely played a game worth celebrating.

The night started off fairly slow for the Torreys. After they were stopped by the Eagle’s on their first drive, the Torreys allowed a 36 yard touch down run by Hank Ontiveros to bring the score to 7-0. The Eagles forced a few more Torrey turnovers in the first quarter, but the pace of the quarter slowed until it ended.

Both teams brought a new level of energy and intensity into the second quarter, however, as it began with a 45 yard touch down pass from Connor Whitton to Caleb Phillips and the score was now 14-0 in favor of the Eagles. The Torreys responded with a touchdown of their own when Braxton Burmeister ran the ball 10 yards for a touchdown and brought the score to 14-7. Whitton’s 32 yard touch down pass to Matthew Mcroskey occurred after the Eagles held off the Torrey’s next run, aided by strong defensive tackles from Brennan Goring, and the score was now 21-7, but the first half wasn’t over yet. After the La Jolla Country Day Torreys recovered a fumble by the Eagles, Burmeister completed a four yard touch down pass with one second remaining on the clock. The score going into half was 28-14.

In the third quarter, the momentum began to shift more in favor of the Eagles, especially after the Torrey’s Brennan Goring had to leave the game after an apparent knee injury. Two more touch downs by Hank Ontiveros (one in the third and one in the fourth quarter) brought the score up to 35-14 with the Eagles in the lead. Sensing the clock running out in the fourth quarter, Braxton Burmeister began to stretch his passing game. After a few key passes, Burmeister ran the ball one yard for the Torrey’s final touch down of the night, but it wasn’t enough to close the gap between them and the Eagles.

The final score of the game was 49-21 in favor of the Eagles, concluding the last game of both’s teams regular season schedule. Both teams look to extend their season in playoffs the following week, and the Prep Pigskin Report will be covering it every step of the way.

The last week of regular season play includes a matchup between the La Jolla Country Day Torreys (7-2) and the Santa Fe Christian High School Eagles (7-2) before we head into the playoffs. Both teams currently hold the same overall season and league record (3-1) and are tied for second in the Coastal Football League.

La Jolla Country Day is coming off of a 66-20 win against Horizon Christian Academy. The Torrey’s have been led all season by senior quarterback Braxton Burmeister who has 2,648 total passing yards, 832 rushing yards, and 34 passing touchdowns on the season (the most in the Coastal League). Casey Mariucci, a 6'4 215 lb senior wide receiver with 862 receiving yards and 10 touch downs has also been key to the Torrey’s offense. The two seniors have combined for a consistently solid offense throughout the season. The Torreys are also anchored on defense by senior Brennan Goring who leads the team with 76 total tackles. These three players will prove to be a threat to both the Eagle’s offense and defense.

On the other side of the field, the Eagles are led by their senior quarterback Connor Whitton who has 680 yards and 8 touch down passes while senior Hank Ontiveros has 467 rushing yards. Senior Caleb Phillips has 400 receiving yards as well as 76 tackles on the year. With this offensive senior trio, the Eagles are coming off a four game winning streak in which they scored at least 62 points or more against their opponents and had two shut outs. The Eagle’s offensive prowess will be a strong matchup for the Torrey’s tight defense.

A win in this final matchup and a loss by Bishop’s Football could potentially propel one of these teams into a tie for first with Bishop. Either way, a win will separate their matching records and the fate of both team’s regular seasons will be determined this Friday at 7:00 pm at Torrey Pines High School.
