Jersey Mikes City Game of the Week: Cathedral Catholic Dons 31, Madison Warhawks 7

Posted: Updated:

This Jersey Mikes City Game of the Week might not have looked too exciting on the scoreboard, but when the #1 Cathedral Catholic Dons take on the #2 Madison Warhawks we’ll have something to talk about no matter the ending! Both sides had enough star power to make their own Silver Pigskin rankings, so this game truly proved which players are ready for the next level.

Madison got on the board first thanks to a couple critical 4th down conversions by superstar quarterback Terrell Carter. Erick Buchanan capped the drive off with a direct snap for 6, and Cathedral would reply with a 21-0 2nd quarter! The 12 minute run ended in video game like fashion, with about 51 seconds left running back Shawn Poma took a short pass and turned it into 75 yards plus a wider gap for Madison to come back from. The catch and run gave the Don’s a 24-7 lead going into halftime.

The most impressive players of the night had to be Cathedral Catholic’s defensive unit. Madison’s stud running back Erick Buchanan had a rough day by Buchanan standards with only 87 rushing yards. The Don’s also did a great job of containing Terrell Carter, the senior had only thrown one pick the entire year before his two giveaways in this game. The play of cornerback Nick Doyle and linebacker Moroni Anae led Cathedral’s shut down second half. Doyle’s critical deflection on a 4th down pass to the end zone along with a monstrous sack by Anae were an incredibly important part of keeping Madison’s offensive attack stagnant. Poma’s touchdown run in garbage time added on to the Don’s final total, Cathedral Catholic earned a well fought, well deserved victory over the Madison Warhawks.

The CIF San Diego rankings have been freshly updated for the last time this year, and this game ended up having much bigger implications than the ultimate bragging rights. With the loss Madison will drop out of the Open Division to the 1st seed in Division One, while Cathedral Catholic remains at number one. Both sides enjoy a bye next week, Cathedral Catholic then takes on Torrey Pines while Madison waits for the winner of Steele Canyon vs El Camino. Playoff time is finally here, be sure to catch all the action next Friday on Prep Pigskin Report!

PREVIEW - This Friday's Jersey Mikes City Game of the Week is looking more like the game of the year! With the Cathedral Catholic Dons at #1 and the Madison Warhawks at #2 in PPR's Top 10, this battle of the best will truly decide who's the most superior team in the county.

A perfect 9-0 record doesn't do justice to how well Cathedral Catholic has played this season. The Dons defense has been particularly dominating, they've held opposing squads to 7 or less points in 5 of the teams 9 wins. On the offensive side Cathedral Catholic boasts stars at nearly every position, with signal caller Tate Haynes leading the way. Haynes has played very well with 14 total touchdowns to only 3 interceptions, and whenever he needs a breather the rushing attack of Shaun Poma and Adam Eastwood do more than get the job done. The duos 21 combined rushing touchdowns speak for themselves.

It's very obvious to say this will be Cathedral Catholics most critical game of the 2016 season; but it would be a disservice to the Madison Warhawks to not highlight why they're such a tough matchup. The Dons defense is incredibly strong but Madison's defenders have been just as punishing. The 8-1 Warhawks have allowed 7 points or less in 6 victories. Quarterback Terrell Carter is the heart and soul of his team, he's put up mind blowing numbers throwing 25 touchdown passes to only 1 pick. It's very important Cathedral Catholic contain him early, it will be tough enough moving the ball against defensive lineman Cesar Nillaga (7.5 sacks) and linebacker Sami Nui (6 sacks).

There's no deep hatred between the two sides, this is their first time playing each other, but a new rivalry may be born with the Western League title and Open Division seeding on the line. Players, coaches, and fans alike are aware they're participating in the biggest game of their lives; with Madison head coach Rick Jackson noting it can't get any bigger than the league title. You won't want to miss the highlights of this game and so much more this Friday at 10:30 PM only on Prep Pigskin Report!
