Classical Academy Caimans 35, Escondido Charter White Tigers 6

Posted: Updated:

The Classical Academy Caimans hitched a ride on the back of Ty Patterson, who piled up 318 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns on the way to a 35-6 win over crosstown rival Escondido Charter.

With the victory, the Caimans claim the outright Pacific League championship. They have likely assured themselves the number one spot in the Division 5 playoff bracket as well.

Patterson opened the scoring on a 44-yard run in the first quarter, capping an array of jukes and broken tackles with a dive for the pylon. And Caleb Moen would double the lead in the second, on a 9-yard keeper that made it 14-0 at the break.

In the third quarter, Escondido Charter moved deep into Classical territory when Mathew Burcin escaped from pressure and dumped it off to Tristan MacMahon for a 31-yard scamper. The White Tigers went for it on fourth-and-goal from the three, with Burcin outrunning the defense to the corner of the end zone. A blocked point-after left the margin at 14-6.

But the Caimans quickly replied. At the Charter 27, Moen mishandled the snap -- but was able to pick it up, and weaved down the sideline for an unlikely score.

Patterson broke big runs for the Caimans all night long, and he put the hammer down in the final quarter. With the ball on their own one yard line, he broke out for a 74-yard gallop, and then finished off the drive with his second score. His five-yard touchdown on their next possession set the final score at 35-6.

PREVIEW: The Small School Game of the Week closes out the regular season with a crosstown rivalry, as the Classical Academy Caimans (5-4, 3-0) take on the Escondido Charter White Tigers (2-7, 1-2) at Orange Glen High School.

The Pacific League contest is set to kick off at 7 p.m. Your faithful Red Jackets will be live on the scene for all of the evening's festivities, with pregame coverage during the PrePR and full highlights after the game.

Classical leans on a senior-heavy backfield, with quarterback Caleb Moen flanked by runners Ty Patterson and Jaxon Racciato. They enter this contest with an unblemished 3-0 record in Pacific League play, compiling a total score of 99-45 during that stretch. With a win, they would sew up the outright league title.

The Caimans also hold the top spot in the Division 5 power rankings, and a victory would most likely ensure that they maintain that position. In any case, they are a lock for a high seed after missing the playoffs by just one spot in 2015.

Less than two miles separate these schools, who also squared off in last year's regular season finale. Escondido Charter claimed bragging rights that time, with a 23-20 win.

This year, the White Tigers will look to their own set of senior playmakers, headlined by James Frazier, Jake Zimmerman, and Jaelyn Williams.
