Gov. Brown campaigns for 'No on 53' in San Diego

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — Governor Jerry Brown will be in San Diego Thursday to campaign against Proposition 53, a statewide measure that would require voter approval before any revenue bonds over $2 billion could be issued or sold.

The governor will campaign with local councilman Todd Gloria and labor officials from International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 569, San Diego Firefighters IAFF Local 145 and State Building and Construction Trades Council in Tierrasanta at 1 p.m. Thursday.

Supporters of the measure claim a loophole currently allows politicians and agencies to circumvent a public vote and borrow billions of dollars without voter approval. Opponents argue it takes power away from local governments and could raise costs.

The fiscal impact statement in the California’s voter guide says the fiscal impact is unknown and would depend on which projects are approved.
