There is only one State Senate race in San Diego County, but at least one of the names will be very familiar. Democrat Toni Atkins is running to replace the outgoing state senator for the 39th district, Marty Block.
It caused quite a stir among Democrats, because Atkins announced she planned to run against block, before he agreed to drop out of the race.
Atkins was the first San Diegan to be speaker of the Assembly and she was on the San Diego City Council from 2000 to 2008.
Her challenger is republican John Renison. He is an entrepreneur and has a tech company called piggyback technologies. Renison served in the California military reserve.
