Morse Tigers 31, Mira Mesa Marauders 15

Posted: Updated:

When the PPR crew arrived at halftime to Morse High School, the Tigers (6-4) were leading the Marauders of Mira Mesa (1-9) 23-7. Mira Mesa would make things interesting in the third quarter, but Morse would pull away in the end, winning 31-15.

The Marauders defense would force a fumble on the first drive of the second half, as Morse running back Martell Irby was swarmed in the Tigers backfield. Later in the quarter, Marauders running back Lamar Raboteau Jr. took a handoff for 25 yards near the Tigers red zone. A few plays later, going for it on fourth down, Noah Tumblin found a window between two defenders, connecting with Marcus Dean for an 11 yard touchdown pass. Going for two, Tumblin would throw almost the same exact pass to the other side of the end zone, finding Albert Lemon and making it a one score game with the Tigers still leading 23-15.

Morse would not take long to answer, as Timothy Patrick called his own number on five consecutive plays, ending with an 11 yard touchdown run himself early in the final quarter. Irby took the direct snap into the end zone for their own successful for two point conversion, and the Tigers would run out the clock in the fourth. It is worth noting that Irby and Patrick carried the load for Morse tonight, as the Tigers leading rusher, Markus Turner, was not dressed for the contest. Regardless, Morse ends the season with a victory to hopefully help their eventual playoff seed.

PREVIEW: The final week of the regular season is upon us, and it will feature a final non-conference game as the Morse Tigers (5-4) will host the Marauders of Mira Mesa (1-8). Mira Mesa has suffered at the hands of a daunting schedule, which includes Western League opponents like undefeated Cathedral Catholic and the Madison Warhawks, both ranked #1 and #2 respectively in the latest KUSI Top 9 poll. Did I mention #7 Saints is also in that league?

Though Mira Mesa has struggled in the win-loss column, they have capable athletes at their skill positions, and have the stats to intimidate their opposition. Through nine games thus far, the Marauders have used a pair of quarterbacks in Sophomore Noah Tumblin and Senior Feena Phakasoum. Tumblin has more yards passing (649), but Phakasoum has thrown the majority of the touchdowns (5). Sophomore receivers Albert Lemon and Marcus Dean combine for 42 catches for 591 yards and five touchdowns, while Senior running back/receiver Giovanni Herrera has 25 receptions for 250 yards and three touchdowns himself. All that said, Mira Mesa prefers to keep the ball on the ground, particularly in the hands of running back Lamar Raboteau Jr. The Senior has compiled over 1,000 yards on the ground this year on 146 carries and nine rushing scores. Averaging over 135 yards from scrimmage per game, expect a heavy dose of Raboteau Jr.

Morse will counter the Marauders offense with one of the county’s toughest rushing attacks. Led by Senior running back Markus Turner, the Tigers offense runs what I like to call the Shotgun Wing-T. Using deception with fake handoffs and counter plays, Morse has an athletic offensive line that can block in space, and open holes downfield for Turner and fellow running back, Martell Irby. Turner already has over 1,000 yards on the ground and double-digit touchdowns, while Irby could surely surpass the 1,000 yard mark this Friday with a couple big runs. Both players will be fun to watch as they each average over 140 total yards from scrimmage per game.

This will be the tenth meeting between the two schools since 2004. Morse has only beaten Mira Mesa once in that span, with the win coming three years ago in October of 2013. The Tigers will look to come out swinging on Friday, as a win this week could propel them to a higher playoff seed. Kickoff will be from Morse High School at 6:30pm. Be sure to tune in to the Prep Pigskin Report for all the highlights at 10:30pm, only on KUSI.
