The first week of South Bay play-off action features the Otay Ranch Mustangs hosting the Mount Miguel Matadors. Both teams enter tonight's game with identical records of 3-7. One of the big challenges for the Matadors is how to contain big Devin Lloyd who at 6'4", 220 pounds is a formidable threat on both offense and defense. As a wide receiver he has six touchdown receptions. As a free safety he has seven interceptions including several pick-sixes. He is also the team's punter! The Mustangs take a 22-0 lead in the first quarter courtesy of a short run by Gus Espiritu and two touchdown runs by Fenuki Kauvaka including a 70-yard kick-off return. In the second quarter Gus Espiritu runs it in for his second touchdown to make it 29-0 Mustangs. The Matadors finally get on the board when Cesar Signals catches a pass from Bennie Valdez and runs it in for a 40-yard touchdown.150 In the third quarter Otay makes it 36-6 with a short run by Amari Riley. Minutes later Riley motors into the end zone for a 55-yard score to make it 43-6 Mustangs. In the fourth quarter the Matadors score their second touchdown on a run by Shamar Greene. Although Mount Miguel does a good job in containing Devin Lloyd, the final score is 43-13, Otay. The Mustangs will now face powerhouse Mater Dei who they almost beat during the regular season. In that game they were successful in not allowing a single touchdown to running back sensation CJ Verdell...so stay tuned for a great South Bay playoff match-up!
The Week 12 South Bay Game of the Week features a first round play-off game with the Otay Ranch Mustangs hosting the Mount Miguel Matadors. Both teams have identical records of 3-7. Offensively the Matadors are lead by quarterback Benny Valadez who has passed for 11 touchdowns and rushed for eight touchdowns. Running back Shemar Greene has racked up 6 rushing touchdowns and has rushed for over 100 yards per game on six occasions this year. On defense the Matadors' Cameron Hanson has a team-leading 47 solo tackles. The Mustangs are lead by big Devon Lloyd (6'5", 220 lbs.) who has been both an offensive and defensive threat. He has 10 touchdowns to his credit, 6 of which are receiving scores. On defense he leads the team with 7 interceptions, several of which have been pick-sixes. He also handles punting duties for the Mustangs. On the field he looks so physically dominating you think that an NFL tight end has snuck into a high school football game! Throwing some of those touchdown passes to Lloyd is quarterback Cristian Zamudio who has amassed 9 passing touchdowns this season. Running backs Fenuki Kauvaka and Gus Espiritu both have rushed for 5 touchdowns. In the tackling department Nick Sandoval leads the team with 41 solo wraps.
