University City Centurions 49, Orange Glen Patriots 35
The University City Centurions will move on in the CIF SDS Division IV playoffs, as they beat the Orange Glen Patriots 49-35.
The Centurions took a quick 13-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to a touchdown run by Marcel Patterson and a touchdown pass from Casey Granfors to Gavin Rassmussen. But the Orange Glen defense scored on a 41 yard pick six by Edgar Aceves.
They would trade leads once before halftime. But University was on top 35-20 heading into the half.
The Centurions scored on their opening drive on a 20 yard td run by Granfors. But Orange Glen wasn’t going to go down without a fight. On the following series, Pats’ Blaine Bailey threw it up to Malachi Russell who hauled it in for a 90 yard score. After a short touchdown pass to Brandon Montes, it was a single possession game with a score of 42-35.
After a redzone interception for the Centurions, University City extended their lead with an impressive 54 yard touchdown pass from Granfors to Trevor Faison. The Centurions won, 49-35.
The season is over for the Patriots. The Centurions will travel east to face #1 Southwest El Centro next week. Playoff coverage continues next week on KUSI’s Prep Pigskin Report.
PREVIEW: The first week of the post season will take the Red Jackets and our Pigskin Idol back to University City High School, where the Centurions will take on the Orange Glen Patriots.
University City (5-5) is seeded 8th in Division IV. They are fresh off of an impressive win last week where they blanked the Crawford Colts, 35-0. QB Casey Granfors had quite a day as he was responsible for all four of University City’s touchdowns. His 67 yard TD run is up for the PPR Play of the Week.
Orange Glen (4-6) is ranked 9th, right behind the Centurions in Division IV. The Pats are coming off of a heartbreaking loss to Horizon last week, the final score was 42-39. They lost on a last second field goal that won the game for the Panthers. On the bright side, the Pats’ QB threw for four touchdowns and had a rushing TD.
The football programs at Orange Glen and University City are not familiar with one another. They have not played against each other in more than 10 years. The winner of this week’s game will move on to play #1 Southwest High School, El Centro.
Game time is 7 p.m. on Friday at University City High School. Tune in as our Pigskin Idol reads the highlights from this game on KUSI’s Prep Pigskin Report, Friday night at 10:30 p.m.
