By Jay Brown
The Chick-Fil-A Game of the Week was great Division I playoff showdown as the Steele Canyon Cougars hosted visitors from the North, in the Carlsbad Lancers.
It didn’t take too long for the action to get started.
On Carlsbad’s second series of the game, the Lancers marched all the way down to the Cougars 2-yard line and on the very next play a botched hand-off from Isaiah Ramos would get loose and Steele Canyon would recover the fumble deep in their own territory.
The Cougars were unable to move the ball and would be forced to punt, giving Carlsbad excellent field position. Ramos would connect with Asa Turner on a 17-yard touchdown pass to give the Lancers the early 7-0 lead.
Carlsbad’s very next offensive series, the Lancers would execute a 10-play drive and Jason Siaosi would run the ball in from 3-yards out, the extra point would be blocked and the Lancers would be up by 13.
Fast-forward to late in the second quarter. Steele Canyon’s quarterback Thomas Fishburne was driving the Cougars towards their first score of the night when Asa Turner intercepts a pass. Three plays later Carlsbad would pull out the old fake punt play, giving them a fresh set of downs and great field position. Two plays later Ramos find Trent Nyberg for the touchdown. Extending the Lancers lead to 20.
To start the fourth quarter, the Isaiah Ramos would once again find Asa Turner on a 28-yard touchdown pass to give the Lancers a commanding 27-point lead.
Steele Canyon would not go quietly into the night. After the ensuing kick-off was returned to Carlsbad’s 35-yard line, Thomas Fishburne would engineer a six-play 35-yard drive concluding with a 18-yard touchdown pass to Mikel Oliver.
With time running out in the game, Steele Canyon was determine to put some more points on the board. Fishburne would find Isaiah Thompson for the 27-yard catch and run for a touchdown, however it was too little, too late.
Lancers quarterback Isaiah Ramos finished the night with 144-yards passing and three touchdowns.
While the season is now over the Cougars, the Lancers could face their toughest challenge yet. Carlsbad will travel to Madison to take on the Warhawks, this coming Friday night.
PREVIEW: The Chick-Fil-A Game of the Week showcases a first-round Division I playoff matchup as the Carlsbad Lancers travel south to face the Steele Canyon Cougars.
Both teams are no strangers to the postseason.
The Lancers and the Cougars have made it to the playoffs each of the past four years. Carlsbad appeared in the Open Division playoffs in 2015 and 2014, and the Division I playoffs in 2013 and 2012. Steele Canyon appeared in the 2015 and 2014 Division I playoffs, the Open Division playoffs in 2013, and the Division II playoffs in 2012.
Both Carlsbad and Steele Canyon had a rough 2016 season. Both schools finished the regular season with 3-7 records respectively. While both teams may have finished with below .500 records, they are re-invigorated for a deep postseason run.
Carlsbad will be looking to junior quarterback Isaiah Ramos to lead the Lancers to victory. He put up over 1,400 yards during the season and frequently targeted his favorite receivers in sophomore Asa Turner and junior Joe Fontenot.
Steele Canyon’s defense will be looking to shut down the Lancers early and control the pace of the game.
Cougars junior quarterback Thomas Fishburne racked up just over 1,100 yards to finish the regular season and while junior running back Deontae McKinney didn’t put up huge numbers this season, he is a force to be reckon with capable of getting loose and breaking off large runs.
With two young teams that are evenly matched, don’t be surprised if this game comes down to the last possession or a possible overtime win.
