Jersey Mikes City Game of the Week: La Jolla Country Day Torreys 60, Kearny Komets 14
By Luke Sutherland
Both the La Jolla Country Day Torreys and Kearny Komets took the field Friday night with similar goals made on different paths. The Torreys barely missed out on a bye in Division 4’s opening round and were out to prove they deserved one of those top four spots. Kearny also had something to prove in this game and that is that they belong in the postseason with the rest of the elite teams. An interesting first quarter turned into complete domination by LJCD for the rest of the game; strong play in every aspect led to a 60-14 rout by the Torreys.
It only took LJCD’s star signal caller Braxton Burmeister two quarters to put up 203 passing yards with 3 scores through the air to go with 96 rushing yards and 3 more touchdowns. That’s 299 total yards, 6 touchdowns, and a very relaxing second half for Burmeister. He was the one to put the Torrey’s on the board first, finding Brennan Goring for six and running another in for himself on LJCD’s next possession. Kearny’s DJ Linton cut the lead to 14-6 on a touchdown catch from Lerone Randle, and this is the point when La Jolla Country Day never looked back. By the time the starters called it a night, the score was 51-6 with a few minutes before halftime!
It would be easy to award Silver Pigskin finalist Braxton Burmeister the Jersey Mike’s City Game of the Week MVP for his jaw dropping performance, but I’m sure he won’t complain that this time his receiver gets the attention. Senior Brennan Goring made his quarterback’s night a lot easier, catching 6 passes for 101 yards and the first touchdown of the night. La Jolla Country Day will now prepare for the well rested Mar Vista Mariners, and the Kearny Komets enjoy their break before hitting the field again next year. PREVIEW - Division 4 football is taking over the Jersey Mikes City Game of the Week this Friday, and they couldn’t have picked a better time than the opening week of CIF playoffs! The 12th seeded Kearny Komets will try to keep their season alive in hostile territory against the 5th seeded La Jolla Country Day Torreys.
The Kearny Komets snuck their way into the playoffs with a strong performance down the stretch by getting a solid win over the Crawford Colts and taking the Coronado Islanders to the limit in a 19-18 loss. Wide receiver Treshaun Grey sparked the way in a game where Kearny led the Division 4 Central League champion Islanders by as much as 18-6 before losing the lead. Now focused on keeping a lead over the Torreys, Kearny has weapons on the defensive side of the ball that could spark an upset. La Jolla Country day has plenty of great players on offense, but it will be hard to get them involved if defensive end Levi Olumani has the kind of dominating numbers he’s put up through out the season. Olumani’s 8 sacks on the year make him a tough assignment for any offensive lineman thats up for the task.
A stifling defense will be necessary for the Kearny Komets because keeping up with the LJCD offense is too much for most teams. Silver Pigskin finalist Braxton Burmeister has taken the meaning of “carrying a team” to a whole new level. The quarterback’s thrown for nearly 3,000 yards while also leading the team in rushing averaging 7.5 yards a carry. Lamar Jackson isn’t the only quarterback in the country scoring every way possible, Burmeister has 53 (FIFTY THREE!!) total touchdowns this year with 35 coming through the air and 18 on the ground. I’m sure Braxton would agree those numbers would be even harder to get without his elite receiving trio of Casey Mariucci, Jaden Dir, and Brennan Goring. The three have combined for 149 of Burmeister’s completions for 2,230 yards and 28 touchdowns! If the Komets can’t get pressure on the quarterback then these three will have a field day.
Playoff football is finally here after all the wait! A time for names to be made, hearts to be broken, and legends to be written into history. Find out who’s moving on and who’s going home for this game and so much more this Friday at 10:30 PM on Prep Pigskin Report!
