The Week 13 South Bay Playoff Game of the Week features the powerhouse Mater Dei Crusaders (9-1) hosting the Otay Ranch Mustangs (4-7). This could be a great game given the fact Otay Ranch lost by only one point the last time these two teams played one another. The Mustangs not only lost to Mater Dei by only one point but also did not allow a single touchdown to running sensation CJ Verdell. In the first quarter Mater Dei quarterback Chris Jones gets the Crusaders on the board first with a fake hand-off and solo scamper into the end zone. CJ Verdell makes it 14-0 Crusaders with a two-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Minutes later Jovan Bayless intercepts an Otay pass which leads to a touchdown pass from Chris Jones to CJ Verdell. At the end of the first half with seconds to go, Chris Jones throws a touchdown pass to Quentin Frazier to make it 28-0 Crusaders. In the third quarter Andres Septien kicks a 23-yard field goal to give Mater Dei a 31-0 lead. In the fourth quarter he boots a 31 yarder to make it 34-0 Crusaders. Late in the fourth quarter Mustang running back Gus Espiritu prevents Otay Ranch from being shut out when he runs it in for a touchdown leaving the final score 34-7 Crusaders. Mater Dei will host the Bonita Vista Barons in the next level of playoff action. As always thank you for watching and see you next week!
The Week 13 South Bay Playoff Game of the Week features the powerhouse Mater Dei Crusaders (9-1) hosting the Otay Ranch Mustangs (4-7). This could be a great game given the fact Otay Ranch lost by only one point the last time these two teams played one another. The Crusaders have been an offensive juggernaut this season, lead by running back CJ Verdell. Over ten games he has scored a total of 28 touchdowns and is averaging over 160 rushing yards per game. Quarterback Chris Jones has also been an offensive tour de force in his own right with 21 touchdown passes. In the receiving department Eli Shelton leads the Crusaders with six touchdown catches. The Mustangs not only lost to Mater Dei by only one point in their last meeting, but also did not allow a single touchdown to CJ Verdell, thanks in part to the tackling skills of Nick Sandoval who leads the team with 41 solo tackles. Big Devin Lloyd has been a huge contributor on both sides of the ball with six touchdown catches and eight interceptions, including several pick-sixes. Throwing those touchdown passes to Lloyd is quarterback Christian Zamudio who has thrown a total of nine scoring passes.
