The #3 Santana Sultans will move on in the CIF SDS Division IV playoff tournament as they defeated the #6 Coronado Islanders by a score of 44-0.
On the opening kickoff, Santana’s Brock Ellis ran it all the way back for an 89 yard touchdown to put the Sultans up first. And the team never looked back, thanks to three touchdowns scored by RB Bobby Wallace.
The main highlight of the night was Wallace’s historic performance. With his 110 rushing yards on 14 carries, Bobby Wallace managed to break three school records. The first was all time rushing yards in a single season, previously held by RB Drew Palmer in 1994. This season he racked up a total of 1,352 rushing yards, breaking the record of 1,244.
He also beat the record for most touchdowns in a season, previously held by WR John Fields in 1999. He’s scored 23 touchdowns this season, defeating Fields’ 21 scores.
Finally, Wallace shattered the record for most points scored in a season, previously held by WR Jonathon Tippin in 2006. He’s scored 138 points so far, as opposed to the old record of 120 points.
And keep in mind, Wallace still has at least one more game to play. So he will likely extend these records.
The Islanders season has come to an end as they finish at 9-3. The Sultans will move on to face #2 Monte Vista next week for the Division IV Semi Finals.
PREVIEW: Week 13 will take the Red Jackets along with our Pigskin Idol to Santana High School to watch the Sultans take on the Coronado Islanders for the Division IV Quarterfinals.
The sixth-ranked Coronado Islanders (9-2) are coming off of a last minute win against the Central Spartans. It was neck and neck up until the last few minutes. The Islanders’ Briley Knight found Micah Rickard for a 14 yard touchdown pass to give them the win, 20-17. In last year’s playoffs, the Islanders were named CIF SDS Division V Champs. They made it to the CIF State Division VI-AA Championships, but fell to East Nicolaus from northern California.
The #3 Santana Sultans (6-4) enjoyed a bye last week as they were able to rest up for Friday’s game. Before last week, the Sultans suffered a loss at the hands of Mount Miguel. The final score was 47-41. In the post season last year, Santana made it into the CIF SDS Division IV Quarterfinals but lost to University City.
The winner of this game will go on to face the winner between Serra and Monte Vista in next week’s Semi Finals. Tune in as our Pigskin Idol reads the highlights from this game on KUSI’s Prep Pigskin Report, Friday night at 10:30 p.m.
