Chick-Fil-A Game of the Week: Cathedral Catholic Dons 45, Torrey Pines Falcons 7

Posted: Updated:

The Chick-Fil-A Game of the Week was an epic showdown for the “Battle of Del Mar Heights Road” in CIF San Diego Section Open Division quarterfinal action.

The game got off to a quick start, on the very first play from scrimmage; Falcons quarterback Miles Hastings threw an interception into the waiting hands of Dons linebacker Mornoi Anae. Four plays later, Dons running back Adam Eastwood scored from 3-yards out giving Cathedral Catholic the early lead.

Torrey Pines was looking to respond on their very next possession. Facing a 3rd and 2 from their own 28-yard line, two personal foul calls against Cathedral Catholic would give the Falcons great field position and a fresh set of downs. After marching down to the Dons 14-yard line, Torrey Pines would have 4th and 6, but two consecutive off-sides penalties against Cathedral Catholic would give the Falcons 1st and 10 from the Dons 4-yard line. On the very next play, Falcons running back Luke Duerr would score from 4-yards out to tie the game at seven.

It looked as if Torrey Pines was going to give Cathedral Catholic a run for their money, however that would quickly change.

The Falcons would be unable to mount an offensive against the Dons tough defense.

Cathedral Catholic would go on to score six more times including a 40-yard Liam King field goal.

2016 Silver Pigskin Finalist Tate Haynes would go on to rack up 123 all-purpose yards and 3 touchdowns, and fan-vote Silver Pigskin Finalist Jordan Genmark-Heath ran for 20 yards and a score.

Chick-Fil-A Player of the Game, Dons running back Shawn Poma finished the night with 45 yards on the ground and a touchdown.

The Falcons had an impressive run, winning the last four games of the season on the way to their first Avocado League title since 2010. We can expect good things from Ron Gladnick’s Falcons in the future.

Cathedral Catholic will look to continue their quest for an undefeated season and section championship next week as they host the Mission Hills Grizzlies in the Open Division semifinals the day after Thanksgiving.

PREVIEW: The Chick-Fil-A Game of the Week showcases a CIF San Diego Section Open Division quarterfinal match-up between two crosstown rivals in the most epic “Battle of Del Mar Heights Road” ever to be seen, as the undefeated and number one seed Cathedral Catholic Dons host the Torrey Pines Falcons.

2016 marked the first year in which these two teams failed to meet each other during the regular season. Less than two miles separates Torrey Pines from Cathedral Catholic. The Dons hold the series lead (3-1) dating back to 2012.

Not only is this a rivalry game, it’s also a match-up between two league champions.

In their very first season in the Western League, the Dons went undefeated to take home the crown. The Falcons were able to claim their first Avocado League title since 2010 after beating La Costa Canyon in the “Surf Bowl” ending the season at (5-1) in league play.

The Falcons will be looking to contain the Dons incredibly potent offense, helmed by 2016 Silver Pigskin Finalist Tate Haynes. Haynes isn’t the only offensive dominant force for the Dons. Sophomore running back Shawn Poma has rushed for 753 yards in 10 games this season. Poma put up impressive numbers against Point Loma when he rushed for 228 yards and four touchdowns. While Cathedral’s run game is punishing, don’t forget their air attack and the steady hands of senior wideout Jordan Genmark-Heath. “The Swede” found the end-zone six times during the regular season.

While the Dons offense can seem daunting, the Falcons shouldn’t be counted out just yet. Torrey Pines has a stellar tag team duo in senior running back Luke Duerr and junior running back Sully O’Brien. Duerr finished the regular season with 834 yards on the ground, posting four 100-yard plus games this season including a season high 160 yards rushing in the regular season finale against the Mavericks. Duerr also found the promised land eight times during the season. O’Brien also posted three 100-yard plus games this season including 111 yards on the ground against La Costa Canyon. The dynamic duo of Duerr and O’Brien accounted for a large portion of the Falcons offense this season.

There is no doubt that this “Battle of Del Mar Height Road” will go down in the books.
