Southwest (EC) Eagles 44, University City Centurions 20
By Alvaro Castillo
Week 13 is over and teams are one step closer to the championship. It was a beautiful drive to the dessert as my photog and I took our 8th trip to the Desert in four seasons to watch the University City Centurions take on host Southwest El Centro.
In the first quarter University City was punting and Southwest's Derek Guzman blocks the punt and recovers it in end zone for an eagles touchdown, 7-0 Southwest.
Still in the first, University City's Casey Granfors would find Jayden Wickware for a 7 yard touchdown pass, two points conversion no good making it 14-6 Eagles.
Later in the half Southwest star back Tyler Saikhon would score on a 25 yard touchdown run after a quick stiff arm to make the game 21-6 Eagles.
Late in the 2nd quarter University City's Quarter Back Granfors finds Gavin Rasmussen for a 15 yard touchdown pass, two point conversion no good, 23-12 Southwest
But the Eagles were just to much for the Centurions as Saikhon would score in the fourth to but this game away on another 25 yard touchdown run,
The final 44-20 Southwest Eagles.
Enjoy you turkey Thursday as #1 Southwest (EC) Eagles move on to host #5 La Jolla Country Day Torrey's in a Division IV semifinal match the night after thanksgiving.
It's Week 13 but Week 2 of playoff action and this week the schedule takes me to the Valley for some Division IV action as the #1 seeded Southwest El Centro Eagles will play host to the #8 seeded University City Centurions. Both teams didn't play each other in the regular season, nor do they have any common opponents.
UC has improved to 6-5 on the season after beating Orange Glen 49-35 last week. The Centurions are lead by senior QB Kees Van Daelen as he averages 248.6 yards per game. On defense UC is lead by Jake Jones who averaged 11.4 tackles per game, 66 solo, 103 total tackles and caused 3 fumbles. The Centurions are going to depend on these two players to outscore the Eagles and stop their running attack.
Southwest El Centro on the other hand had a bye last week in the first round with an 8-2 record. The Eagles offense pounds the ball on the ground as they average 272 yards on the ground per game, scoring an average of 36 points per game. The offense is lead by QB Cameron Jungers who has 715 rushing yards and 632 passing with 15 touchdowns.
The winner of this game will play the winner of #5 La Jolla Country Day vs #4 Mar Vista
