Monte Vista is moving on to the Division IV semifinal with a 39-12 win over Serra.
This one all Monarchs as the Conquistadors struggled to find the end zone in the first half. Meanwhile Monte Vista's 6'2" 200 pound sophomore Jahmon McClendon was on a roll. He has 20 carried for 219 yards and 4 touchdowns in just the first half. Add to that the play of Rashaun Willis Brown who had a 62 yard touchdown run. The following Serra possession Willis Brown would pick Serra's Joaquin Quintana McKinney. That wouldn't be the only time the Monarch defense would come up big. They had several sacks and hurries throughout the game and Torrey Mack also grabbed an interception.
Serra had two field goals in the first half, one set up by a nice gain on the McKinney to Chance Cannon pick up. The Q-Dawgs also flexed their defensive muscle forcing a Monarch fumble in the 3rd quarter but were unable to move the ball. McKinney did find the end zone on the quarterback keep in the 4th quarter.
The Conquistadors end the season 5-7. As for Monte Vista they will host three seeded Santana next Friday in the Division IV semifinal game.
We hit week two of the playoffs with a Division IV match up between two seeded Monte Vista and the ten seeded Serra Conquistadors.
Serra is coming off a big win last week against El Cajon Valley, 24-22. Ryen Sanford with the big interception that sealed the victory for the Q-Dawgs. The Conquistadors making their first playoff appearance since 2013. Quarterback Joaquin Quintana-McKinney has the ability to throw and carry the ball. Ty Dixon and Chance Cannon have shown to be their top receivers. They also rely on junior Bryan Pratt who has eleven touchdown runs this season. Robert Harvey also had two touchdown runs last week.
Monte Vista is coming off a first round bye. The Monarchs are led by star player Rashaun Willis Brown who gets it done on offense and defense. Jose Gonzalez' name is also called frequently as he is in the backfield sharing carries. Jahmon McClendon has also had some big games for the Monarchs this season. Also include Jonathan Gulley and Amir Conly as names that have come up big for the team this year. Monte Vista has posted 276 points this season, while just giving up 142.
