The Underdog Morse Tigers made the trip up the mountain to take on the Valley Center Jaguars and came within a few seconds of going home with the victory.
The Jaguars would strike first, however. Early in the second quarter, Brock Moffitt would gather in the 36-yard pass from QB Ricki Mazzetti, to put Valley Center up 7-0. Morse would answer right back. Tiger QB Timothy Patrick scored on an easy 2-yard run to tie it at 7.
Valley Center would regain the lead when Daniel Belcher scored one of his two TD's on the night from two yards out. The PAT was missed so that made the score 13-7 at halftime.
In the second half, it was the Martell Irby show. He would get the touchdown hat trick by scoring three TDs for the Tigers. He tied the score at 13 in the third quarter with a 64-yard touchdown run.
Belcher would give the Jaguars the lead again with a 12-yard touchdown run to close out the third quarter. 20-13 Valley Center entering the 4th Quarter.
Irby would start the fourth quarter with a HUGE interception and return to the Jaguar's 2-yard line. Patrick would take it in on the next play to give Morse the lead the 21-20. Valley Center would once again take the lead on a 30-yard field goal, 23-21.
It looked like Morse was gonna pull off the upset when Irby broke free and scored on a 45-yard touchdown run. The two-point conversion made the score 29-23 Morse with the lead.
But Valley Center was not to be denied. They marched down the field to the Jaguar's 14-yard line. With six seconds left, Ricki Mazzetti connected with Zachary Mahrenholz for the 14-yard pitch and catch for the game-winning touchdown. The PAT made the final score 30-29.
Valley Center will next take on The Bishop School in the next round of the Playoffs.
The second round of the CIF San Diego Section Division three playoffs have arrived. The #6 Morse Tigers, fresh off a 36-22 win over the Rancho Buena Vista Longhorns, will be driving up the mountain to take on the #3 Valley Center Jaguars.
Morse's Junior Running Back Martel Irby had the touchdown hat trick, scoring three times against the Longhorns, in their opening round playoff match-up. Tiger fans will be looking for a repeat performance from him against Valley Center.
The Jaguars will be well rested and prepared, coming off a bye in the first round. They'll be led by Sophomore Quarterback Ricki Mazzetti who threw for close to 2,000 yards during the regular season. He'll get some help from Senior Running Back Daniel Belcher. Belcher averaged 130 rushing yards per game and finished the regular season with eight touchdowns. If you can't make it out to the game, be sure to tune into The Prep Pigskin Report for all the highlights.
