National City Mile of Cars South Bay Game of the Week: Mater Dei Crusaders 42, Bonita Vista Barons 10

Posted: Updated:

The Week 14 South Bay Playoff Game of the Week features the powerhouse Mater Dei Crusaders (9-1) hosting the Bonita Vista Barons (5-7).
The Barons record is somewhat deceiving as they had a tough schedule this year, but the fact is this could the team's toughest game yet because of the Crusaders powerful offense. Leading the Mater Dei scoring game is running back sensation CJ Verdell who has scored a total of thirty rushing and receiving touchdowns. The Oregon-bound senior is very hard to take down because of his powerful legs described by one opposing coach as 'tree trunks.'
In the first quarter Verdell puts the Crusaders on the board with a 25-yard touchdown run.
Minutes later Verdell with his second touchdown run of the game...this time for 30 yards.
Beginning of the second quarter Verdell runs it in from 7 yards for his third touchdown of the game.
End of the second quarter Chris Jones throws. 29-yard touchdown pass to Eli Shelton to make it 28-3 Crusaders.
Minutes later Baron quarterback Anthony Posada scrambles and throws a nice touchdown pass to Robert Cota.
In the third quarter CJ Verdell runs 64 yards for his fourth touchdown run of the game.
In the fourth quarter Verdell makes it in for his fifth touchdown of the game with a 33-yard run. He finishes the night with almost 300 rushing yards to lead the Crusaders to a 42-10 win.
Mater Dei will play Olympian next week for the Division Two title.

PREVIEW

But what makes the Crusader offense so potent is the fact it does not have to be dependent on Verdell in getting points on the board. Quarterback Chris Jones is a very talented passer who has thrown for 23 touchdowns.
On defense the Crusaders are lead By Jovan Bayless, the son of former NFL star, Martin Bayless, who is one of the Crusaders' leading solo tacklers.
For the Barons Quarterback Anthony Posada is responsible for much of the team's offensive punch who after 11 games threw for 24 touchdowns.
And then there's the uplifting story of Dean Klaser who completed his first season after sitting out all of last year because of a cancer diagnosis....what an impressive young man he is!
As always thank you for watching and see you on Friday night!
