In the San Diego Section CIF Division one Semi-Final Playoff matchup between the La Costa Canyon Mavericks and the St. Augustine Saints, the Mavericks were looking to play the spoiler role. For the first half, they were playing the role perfectly.
In the first quarter, the Saints opening drive ate up more than nine minutes of game time, but penalties killed them as they were flagged for five false start penalties. The quarter ended tied at zero.
In the second quarter, St. Augustine would strike first when Darrell Broussard would run it 61-yards for the game's first score. 7-0 Saints. On the ensuing kickoff, LCC's Karsen Lippert would take it down to the Saints 12-yard line. However, the Mavericks would have to settle for a 30-yard field goal.
Still, in the second quarter, Saints QB Rodney Thompson would fumble the ball that LCC would recover and turn into points. Karsen Lippert would give the Mavericks the lead on a 23-yard touchdown run. The two-point conversion failed to make the score 9-7 Mavericks.
LCC wasn't done. Still, in the second quarter quarterback, Tanner Clark called his own number and would run 38-yards for the score. This time the two-point conversion was good. The Mavericks led 17-7.
Brendan Silvia would score a one-yard touchdown run for the Saints as the second quarter ended to make the score La Costa Canyon 17 St. Augustine 14 at the half.
St. Augustine would own the second half as Rodney Thompson would throw two touchdowns to make the final score 28-17 St. Augustine. The Saints will play the Madison Warhawks in the Division one Championship game. Madison beat the Saints this year in an earlier match-up 56-42.
