National City Mile of Cars South Bay Playoff GOTW: Olympian Eagles @ Mater Dei Crusaders

Posted: Updated:

The Week 15 South Bay Playoff Game of the Week features the powerhouse Mater Dei Crusaders (11-1) taking on the Olympian Eagles (8-4) for the Division Two championship. When these two teams faced off earlier in the season Mater Dei won by a score of 28-7.
Leading the Mater Dei scoring game is running back sensation CJ Verdell who has scored a total of 35 rushing and receiving touchdowns.
He has amassed close to 2,000 rushing yards. The Oregon-bound senior is very hard to take down because of his powerful legs described by one opposing coach as 'tree trunks.' He can squat five hundred pounds. His workout regimen is often in the company of his father who is a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy. He and CJ often lift weights in the morning and run the steps of the Crusaders' stadium...no wonder CJ has legs like tree trunks!
But the fact is while opponents key in on Verdell, Mater Dei has another offensive threat in quarterback Chris Jones who has passed for 25 touchdowns.
The Crusaders are tough on defense as well lead by Jovan Bayless (son of former NFL player Martin Bayless) and Max Schweinke.
For the Olympian Eagles Junior Quarterback Nico Mendoza has performed well throwing 17 touchdown passes over 11 games.
On defense big lineman Dominic Gudino poses a threat on both sides of the ball. He will be honored as the county's premiere lineman at the Silver Pigskin Gala show when he is presented with the prestigious Iron Hog award.
Be sure to catch all of the highlights of this game this Saturday on KUSI at 6,10 and 11.
