The 2016 CIF Open Division Playoffs have had their detractors, but they also have a championship game that features two teams that have found themselves atop the polls for from pre-season to the Championship game when Cathedral Catholic and Helix match-up for the 4th ever San Diego CIF Open Division Championship.
In week four this game had so much hype it was the PPR Chick-Fil-A Game of the Week, as the Dons turned a 21-0 deficit in the 2nd quarter into a 35-28 comeback win. That game did not disappoint, and neither will this one, although the stakes are much higher as these two teams play for the SD CIF Open Division Championship and a State Bowl Bid.
The top seeded Dons are loaded with talent, just ask any college recruiter, QB/Silver Pigskin Finalist Tate Haynes (Boston College), Do-Everything/Silver Pigskin Jordan Genmark-Heath (Cal), Tight End Patrick Brown (Boston College) and those are just the seniors. Sophomore running back Shawn Poma has shown he can carry the load in Sean Doyle’s Wing-T offense gaining more than 1,200 yards from scrimmage in 2016.
The Scotties are one of the few teams in San Diego that can match up with the Dons Toe-to-Toe. Scotty Young (Arizona Commit) can do it on both sides, and Rashad Scott is electrifying with the ball in his hands. And their defense gives up just 12 points a game, and has four shut outs to their credit this season.
Although Scotties will be missing reigning CIF Defensive Player of the Year and Silver Pigskin Finalist Ezekiel Noa, after the senior RB/LB tore his ACL in the Scotties win over Rancho Bernardo in the CIF Open Division Semi-Finals. But this is not new territory for this Helix team, because most of these players return from the team that won the Open Division Championship in 2015.
This game is on of the few San Diego CIF Championship Games that will be worth price of admission. Helix and Cathedral will kick-off at 7:00 Saturday December 3rd at 7:00 PM. Get your popcorn ready for this one.
Highlights and postgame reaction of this game, and the other two championship games will be on the KUSI “All-Sports Report” at 10:45PM Saturday night..
