2016 CIFSDS Division II Championship: Olympian Eagles vs Mater Dei Crusaders

The championship week is finally here as Mater Dei Catholic Crusaders and Olympian Eagles fight until the end for the San Diego Section CIF Division II Championship. These two teams matched up earlier in the season and the Crusaders ended up taking home the victory 28-7.
The Crusaders come into the matchup with a 11-1 record, and an easy win over Bonita Vista in the semifinals last Friday. Mater Dei has only lost to Hawkins from Los Angeles. Key players to look out for on offense are quarterback Chris Jones and running back CJ Verdell.
CJ Verdell is a Silver Pigskin Finalist for the PPR this season. This Oregon commit has 181 carries for 1731 rushing yards and 26 touchdowns. Another offensive threat, Chris Jones has 23 passing touchdowns and three rushing touchdowns. He has passed over 1,800 this season. The defense is led strong safety by Jovan Bayless and Max Schweinke.
Olympian enters the game with an 8-4 record. The Eagles pulled off the upset of the night last Friday with a 27-19 win over Poway. Olympian lost to Poway earlier in the season along with Point Loma, Grossmont and Mater Dei.
The offense is led by junior quarter back Nico Mendoza. Mendoza has 19 passing touchdowns for a total of 1.239 passing yards. Mendoza’s main targets are captain running back Noah Lacsina who has 180 carries for 1053 yards and 6 touchdowns, running back Trey Curry with 89 carries for 770 yards and 6 total touchdowns, and Rashaun Brown who has 80 carries for 541 yards and 5 touchdowns. The Eagles defense is led by Andrew Whyte who has 153 total tackles and Rock Gonzalez with 11 sacks.
The Eagles are playing for a re-due game against the Crusaders and hope to take it all this time, while Mater Dei hopes to defend themselves and win it all. These two will face off on Saturday at 3p.m. at Southwest College.
