Valhalla Norseman 24, Mount Miguel Matadors 14

Posted: Updated:

The Valhalla Norseman (2-1) came to Mount Miguel High School ready to play Friday night, as they were able to take out the Matadors (1-2) 24-14, extending their winning streak over Mt. Miguel to four games thanks to an efficiently run offense and some solid stands on defense.

The play began relatively quietly, with each team not making much noise as both teams’ defenses did their jobs and held their respective opponents to punts, with the only points coming from a Valhalla field goal. As the seconds ticked off for the first quarter, Norseman Bryan Madriz took a handoff and charged down the field, shedding tacklers as he ended up in the end zone with a 63 yard touchdown, and the ensuing PAT made the score 10-0.

Mt. Miguel would not allow this to stand however, as quarterback Mugabe Miller would sling a deep pass to senior Santino Pacheco who, with a defender right next to him, would make a fine catch and separate himself from the defender en route to a 61 yard touchdown. While Miller would still connect with his receivers enough times to surpass 100 yards of passing, he did so while facing pressure from Valhalla lineman, as the Norseman defense usually forced him to scramble out of the pocket and run or simply dart around the defenders while searching for an open man. Valhalla would end up getting to Miller on a couple of plays, swarming the backfield and hauling Miller to the ground for negative yardage. Valhalla and Mt. Miguel would trade touchdown runs to keep the game close, but Valhalla would put the game to bed after halftime by taking a punt all the way to the house, which would result in our final score, a 24-14 Valhalla victory.

Mt. Miguel will have to shake off their loss quickly as they square off against West Hills next Friday. As for Valhalla, they will travel to Eastlake to take on the Titans.

PREVIEW: The high school football season in San Diego has gotten off to a solid start, and this week promises to show some spirited match ups and exhilarating play. One such game features the Valhalla Norseman, (1-1) as they travel to Mount Miguel High School to take on the Mt.Miguel Matadors (1-1).

The Matadors enter this game after toughing out a tense game against Chula Vista, pulling away 15-6 in a game which saw senior quarterback Mugabe Miller throw for 125 yards and a touchdown. The defense was also stout throughout the game, only allowing a single touchdown while holding strong against Chula Vista’s offense, even preventing them from entering the end zone from the 1-yard line. The defense will look to continue their run of success and stave off a hungry Norseman offense, while Mt. Miguel will attack with an offense buoyed by Miller and senior Shemar Greene, who already has over 350 combined yards of rushing and receiving.

Valhalla comes into this game after absorbing a loss against Granite Hills, but have high morals as they carry a three game winning streak against the Matadors and are ready to extend their streak. Valhalla will utilize Dennis Dahlin at the quarterback position and Tyler Schimke will undoubtedly be a boon to the offense. The defense will look to rebound after a rough outing which saw them allow Granite Hills to stretch the field with multiple pass plays for big yardage, and this week’s game will be a good test for this squad.
