The San Marcos Knights used a balanced offensive attack on Friday night to defeat the Del Norte Nighthawks. San Marcos started in the first quarter with a little trickery as three Knights players touched the ball in the backfield before Miles Hastings hooked up with Gavin Cherveny for the 37-yard TD pass.

Later in the 1st quarter, Ethan Cline would take the direct snap and scamper 39 yards for the touchdown. That put San Marcos up 16-0. The Knights never looked back and kept up the offensive onslaught.

In the 2nd quarter, Hasting would play pitch and catch with Kyle Phillips from 17-yards for 1 of 2 Kyle Phillip’s TD’s. Still in the 2nd quarter, Hastings would again connect with Cherveny for his 2nd touchdown catch. This one from 30-yards out.

Moving to the 3rd quarter, Josh Bornes would run through the entire Del Norte defense, breaking 10 different tackles along the way as he rushes 34 yards for another Knights TD. That would run the score to 51-3 San Marcos. The Knights would tack on another 10 points to make the final score, San Marcos Knights 61, Del Norte Nighthawks 3.

San Marcos will start league play next week as they face the very tough Oceanside Pirates, while Del Norte will try to get back on the winning track as they will go on the road and face the Westview Wolverines.

PREVIEW

The San Marcos Knights look to be an early favorite to compete for the top spot in the very competitive Avocado League. The knights stand at 2-0 going into this Fridays game against the Del Norte Nighthawks. Del Norte is coming off of their first win of the season having beat Fallbrook 27-21 and will try and keep that momentum going as they will host San Marcos.

The knights have a pair of offensive threats in WR Kyle Philips and RB Josh Bornes. Phillips has committed to UCLA, while Bornes will stay close to home as he’s committed to SDSU respectively. Del Norte is in a rebuilding season as they lost a lot of kids to graduation. They’re looking to improve on a 4-7 finish last season. The Nighthawks will depend on a trio of players. OL-DL Wesley Petrick, LB Jamie Meoli and LB Jonathan Cappiello, who will see action on both sides of the ball.

If you can’t make it out to the game Friday night, be sure to tune into the Prep Pigskin Report as we’ll have highlights of this game and many more from around the county.
