Game of the Week: El Capitan Vaqueros 14, Valley Center Jaguars 13

Posted: Updated:

The Game of the Week moved itself East as the El Capitan Vaqueros (1-2) ended their unlucky streak this Friday beating the Jaguars from Valley Center (2-1) in Lakeside, marking this their first win of the season and Valley Centers first loss.

Valley Center started off strong with a 12 yard touch down pass from quarterback Rikki Mazzetti to Keith Vasquez in the first quarter. The Vaqueros quickly came back with an 8 yard touchdown scored by senior Star Iuli. Things heated up in the second quarter when El Capitan's Chase Lovato, intercepted a Valley Center pass and ran a 35 yard touchdown. Jaguar, Mateo Sinohui, made a 54 yard run that later turned into a 5 yard touchdown by Sinohui, bringing the halftime score to 14-13 El Capitan.

Second half was all about defense as El Capitan started out the third quarter with center back Chase Lovato intercepting Valley Center quarterback Rikki Mazzetti's pass, catching it in the end zone. Vaqueros’ Jonathan Abbot finished off the third quarter sacking Jaguar quarterback Rikki Mazzetti, and the ball was recovered by El Capitan's Ray Lawler. The game ended on a defensive play with El Capitan's Chance Lovato sacking Valley Center's Rikki Mazzetti, giving El Capitan their season's first win and Valley Center's first loss, at 14-13.

Sean Dickson, starting quarterback for the Vaqueros, was out this week after tearing a muscle in his shoulder in last week’s game. Tight end and defensive end, Antonio Olivieri, stepped up for his team and played as quarterback as well as outside linebacker this week against the Jaguars. Olivieri was 9 for 16 throwing 163 yards, as well as taking 6 carries himself running 54 yards. Gotta love a player who is willing to play both ways, as well as lead his team to their first win of the season!

PREVIEW: The Game of the Week will be moving South as the Jaguars from Valley Center (2-0) will travel down to see if they can keep their record undefeated as they face the Vaqueros from El Capitan (0-2).

Thus far this season the Jaguars have defeated Kamehameha Maui High School 34-0 and Otay Ranch. Rikki Mazzetti Junior Quarterback has thrown for 389 yards in his first two games and is sure to throw for many more to his leading receivers Mateo Sinohui, who has received 313 yards, and Zachary Mahrenholz receiving 226 yards. Sinohui also leads his team in rushing yards, gaining 253 in his first two games of the season. Having this triple threat on the Jaguars’ side of the ball should result in another win for Valley Center.

On the El Capitan side of the ball we have Sophomore Quarterback Wick Hauser who has thrown for 148 yards this season passing to either Yaphet Yokley, receiving for 110 yards, or Antonio Olivieri who has totaled receiving 41 yards. In order to stop the Jaguars from an undefeated season the Vaqueros’ defense needs to be on the lookout for both Sinohui and Mahrenholz. Sacking Mazzetti and preventing Sinohui from running the ball as well should make this match up a good one to see! Tune in to the Prep Pigskin Report Friday night at 10:30 pm to see who’s taken this Game of the Week’s title!
