Granite Hills quarterback Jacob Siegfried found Will Burton for a 10-yard touchdown with 2.9 seconds left on on the clock, as the Eagles escaped with a 43-41 win over Steele Canyon in the El Cajon Ford East County Game of the Week.
The Cougars scored what looked like the game winner just a minute earlier. After trailing for most of the game, they found themselves down by two at their own 37. Senior quarterback Thomas Fishburne launched a deep ball to Jordan Anderson, who hauled in the over-the-shoulder catch for a 63-yard score and a 41-37 Steele Canyon lead.
Siegfried led the Eagles back the other way, reaching the Cougar 10-yard-line with just 9.1 ticks left. He lofted a pass up the seam to Burton, and the tight end made the contested grab as he crashed down in the back of the endzone to regain the lead for good.
Siegfried and Burton opened the scoring as well, on a 64-yard catch-and-run. After two rushing scores from Siegfried and a 24-yard strike to Chris Ostreng, they led 28-7. Steele Canyon closed the first half with a flurry, with Fishburne finding Anderson for touchdowns of 15 and 57 yards to close the gap to 28-21.
In the third quarter, Fishburne ran one in to tie it up at 28. He and Anderson connected for a total of 4 touchdowns on the night, with the third one (a 12-yarder) gave the Cougars their first lead of the game at 35-34.
Granite Hills went back on top with a 29-yard field goal from Justin McElligott to make it 37-35, and the stage was set for the drama of the final minutes.
Both squads get next Friday off before heading on the road, with Steele Canyon set to face Otay Ranch and Granite Hills traveling to Valley Center on September 22.
PREVIEW: The El Cajon Ford East County Game of the Week travels to Granite Hills on Friday, as the Eagles (1-1) welcome the Steele Canyon Cougars (1-1) in a Grossmont Conference cross-league matchup.
For the third year in a row, the same two quarterbacks will face off: Thomas Fishburne for the Cougars and Jacob Siegfried for the Eagles. The signal callers have each won on their home turf -- Siegfried in 2015 and Fishburne in 2016 -- setting up this season's rubber match.
Siegfried will hope for another boost from the Eagles' home crowd, and he can count on some serious muscle from his men in the trenches. Garrett Curran lines up at tackle on both sides of the ball, while Will Burton alternates between tight end and defensive end. David "Tyler" Gonzalez teams up with them on the defensive line, while also joining Siegfried in the backfield (22 carries, 127 yds, 1 TD).
Steele Canyon features another premier two-way threat, with SDSU commit Mikel Oliver anchoring the defensive line and slotting in at tight end. Deontae McKinney and Isaiah Thompson share ball-carrying duties alongside Fishburne.
