The Small School Game of the Week in Week 3 of the Prep Pigskin Report ended with a first win for the El Cajon Valley Braves (1-2) over the Clairemont Chieftains (2-1) 32-21.
Tonight was full of firsts on both sides of the field. The Clairemont Chieftains have a new head coach in town, Coach Manny Diaz, an alumnus of Clairemont. Where El Cajon Valley introduced Vice Principal Nick Williams as their new head coach tonight at their first home game. The Braves let go of their head coach last night.
The Chieftains were the first to throw some points on the board, in the first quarter, Donovan Fitzgerald glides right into the end zone with a 9 yard touchdown run. Soon after, the Braves answer right back, Deshawn Henderson to Darrel Davis who ran it out 36 yard for a touchdown. The Braves missed the PAT bringing the score 7-6 Clairemont. Moments later, El Cajon Valley said hey this worked the first time, why not try the same play again. Henderson to Davis this time for a 61 yard touchdown run. El Cajon Valley took the lead 12-7.
At the start of the second half, Braves Maquel Garner brakes through tackles and sails right into the end zone for a 62 yard touchdown run. Moments later came the rain, and not just a light drizzle but heavy rain drops.
The rain might have been exactly what the Chieftains needed. Later in the third quarter, Chieftains Griffin Catarius to Dylan Suitts who beats the double team for a touchdown bringing the score 26-14. El Cajon still in the lead, but wait, the Chieftains get the ball back after a fumble. Clairemont runs the same play again, Catarius to Suitts this time for a 19 yard touchdown pass changing the score 26-21 Braves. But it wouldn't be enough, El Cajon Valley's Davis got right back in the game and scored a 40 yard touchdown run to end the game 31-21.
Back to the theme of the night, El Cajon Valley won their first game of the season, while the Clairemont suffered their first loss of the season.
The Braves have another home game this time against Crawford. Clairemont back on the road and will travel to Santana.

The Chieftains have a new head coach in town, his name is Manny Diaz who switched the offense to more of a pro-style offense rather than the triple-option attack they are use to.
Clairemont played Francis Parker last Friday and won 14-7. The offense is lead by quarterback Griffin Catariu who threw for 120 yards and touchdown and rushed for 47 yards, the most by a Chieftain last Friday. Rich Kohl rocked the defense in the first quarter with a huge interception that led to a touchdown. Other key players to watch out for on the defensive side is defensive end Michael Azevedo.
El Cajon Valley's head coach Parris Pisiona returns for this 3rd season with the Braves. The Braves are coming off a 38-28 loss against the Kearny Komets. El Cajon Valley started strong in the first quarter where they Braves forced a fumble and returned it for a touchdown.The Braves have a total of 23 varsity players. The offense is lead by running back Maquel Garner and quarterback DeAndre Kelmon. Key players to watch out for on defense is Andre Robles, Mose Kaleuati and Mason Tileia.
