Harvey rescue animals getting prepped for adoption at Helen Woodward Animal Center

Posted: Updated:

RANCHO SANTA FE (KUSI) — The Helen Woodward Animal Center is getting the animals affected by Hurricane Harvey, who are now being cared for at the center, ready to be adopted out.

KUSI'S Elizabeth Alvarez went behind the scenes and has a look at how they're doing and how the influx of animals is affecting the center itself.

Vet Assistant Shanice Daniel has been busy since the Hurricane Harvey animals arrived at the Helen Woodward Animal Center Tuesday.

"They look good. Healthy cats."

"This is Lone and Star, staying with the Texas theme."

The cats were among the 64 other cats and dogs that were brought here from Houston courtesy of Southwest Airlines.

"We're checking everybody over. They've had less than 24 hours to recover from the flight. We want to make sure they're staying healthy, they're getting all their medical exams before they go out." said Jessica Gerke with the Helen Woodward Animal Center.

Helen Woodward says the impact to the center here is minimal right now.

"The call went out that we were headed out to Houston to help the animals in any way we could for the people and fosters were just coming out of the woodwork." said Jennifer Shorey, Director of Operations.

Most of the Harvey dogs are already in foster homes.

Siblings Roadhouse and Ranger are still at the center along with a few other dogs like Montgomery.

Montgomery was named after the shelter in Texas where the animals came from.

"Our whole purpose was to go out and help the animals that were already in the shelters already in the foster system." said Shorey.

Helen Woodward says it could be as early as this weekend that these Hurricane Harvey animals are ready to go to a permanent, loving home.
