Jersey Mike's City Game of the Week: Mira Mesa Marauders 50, Scripps Ranch Falcons 20

Posted: Updated:

In the Week Four Jersey Mike’s City Game of the Week, the Mira Mesa Marauders defeated their rivals, the Falcons of Scripps Ranch 50-20.

This matchup between these rivals took place at University City High School while Mira Mesa’s field is under construction. Regardless, Mira Mesa brought a raucous crowd to see them improve to 4-0 on the season.

Junior Malachi Vanta lead the Mira Mesa defense to a dominating victory with three sacks in the first half, earning him the Jersey Mike’s City Game of the Week Player of the Game.

The Marauders offense jumped to an early lead over the Falcons, leading 14-0 after the first quarter thanks to two touchdown passes from quarterback Noah Tumblin to wide receiver Artyom Harr. The first touchdown went for 74 yards and the second for 20.

Tumblin and Harr connected on a 21 yard touchdown pass in the second quarter, their third of the game. Tumblin completed his fourth touchdown pass of the game after connecting with Javelle Brown for a 49 yard score, leading the Marauders to a 26-0 halftime lead.

Mira Mesa kept the offensive intensity up in the second half, leading 34-0 before Scripps Ranch finally answered with two touchdowns of their own, closing the gap to 34-14.

It was as close as the Falcons, who dropped to 0-4, would get. The Marauders finished the game just how they started, dominating on both sides of the ball and finishing the game with a 50-20 victory over their rivals.

Mira Mesa will travel to Steele Canyon (1-2) on September 29 after their bye week. Scripps Ranch will return next week at Coronado High School (1-2).

PREVIEW: Scripps Ranch opened its doors in 1993, but it took the Falcons two years before they faced their neighbors to the west on the football field.

For the first four years, it looked like a rivalry.

For the lion's share of the last three decades, it's been more of a runaround.

It won't get any easier for the 0-3 Falcons when they face a perfect Mira Mesa Friday night in the Jersey Mike's and EP Save a Life City Game of the Week.

The Marauders are just one of six city-affiliated schools to start the season 3-0, and have a 17 to 4 advantage against their rivals. But numbers have a funny way of fading when rivals meet - even if you don't want to admit there is one.

"We try not to hype it up," Mira Mesa head coach Gary Blevins said. "We don't want these kids fighting."

Save the fighting for first downs and goal lines - which these two squads did last year when Blevins' Marauders collected their sole win of the 2016 in a come from behind thriller. Lamar Raboteau's last second touchdown and two point conversion sealed the deal.

Things weren't much better for Scripps Ranch after that - a 3-7 season in year one of the Marlon Gardinera Era. But even after a tough start to 2017, there are still rays of sunlight over Scripps Ranch.

"He's a great guy, and those kids work hard," Blevins said.

Blevins' squad has been working plenty as well. Junior signal caller Noah Tumblin spends just as much time using his legs as his arms, averaging 85.3 yards a game on the ground alongside five touchdowns through the air.

He's got two talented fellow juniors to target - Artyom Harr has three touchdowns from the backfield and three more out wide, while Marcus Dean can flat out fly on special teams.

The Battle of the 15 has been around since 1995, but hasn't been consistent each year. The 2007 game was lost in the midst of the Witch Creek Fire, while the two teams played twice in 2005. Mira Mesa won both of those games, part of an eight game winning streak at the turn of the century.

The Falcons have lost the last four since a 36-28 victory in 2012.

Due to continued construction at Mira Mesa, this game will take place at University City High School.
