Rancho Buena Vista Longhorns 34, Mission Bay Buccaneers 20

Posted: Updated:

Was Rancho Buena Vista’s travel down the 5 worth it or did Mission Bay take them prisoner at home?

With the start of the game, Mission Bay was out in full force at their own turf with Bucs quarterback Jaiden Correia to Schyler Cerncieros for 27 yard catch in the end zone. Mission Bay leads 7-0. A few minutes later, the Longhorns would get on the board with a field goal.

Going into the second quarter, Longhorns Matthew Llerendas would go for a 16 yard touchdown Mission Bay kept the ball and scores rolling. Jaiden Correia was looking for a wide open man, but decided to go for it himself for 20 yard touchdown run. Extra point would be no good. Mission Bay holding on at 13-10.

Before heading into halftime, the Longhorns were not too happy trailing so they decide to add a field goal, with shortly after Matthew Llerendas would go to his main man Dorian Richardson for 38-yard touchdown pass.

Halftime: Rancho Buena Vista 27, Mission Bay 13

Third quarter was packed with penalties and playing keep away, so the fourth quarter would be where the Bucs could gain back their first quarter momentum and take their first victory of the season.

Unfortunately, as much as the Bucs put up a good swords fight, the Longhorns would score yet another touchdown, this time on Mission Bay’s punt return. Peter Higgs would go on to run 51 yards to get another 6 points on the scoreboard, with the extra point being good.

This was Mission Bay’s third straight loss, now holding a 0-3 record, while Rancho Buena Vista climbs up the ladder to an impressive 3-1 standing.

Make sure to tune in next Friday when Mission Bay takes on Patrick Henry and Rancho Buena Vista has a home game against Escondido.

Just like that high school football is already at the quarter point of the season! San Diego high school football continues to showcase nail biters, overtime wins, and shocking shutouts. Heading into week four, one of the games featured will be the Rancho Buena Vista Longhorns traveling down Interstate 5 to play the Mission Bay Buccaneers.

Despite being 3-8 last season, the Longhorns are already bouncing back with a steady 2-1 record in 2017. The Buccaneers, who ended their 2016 season 5-6 and only 1 out of 5 league wins in the previous season, are off to a slow start of 0-2 this season.

Rancho Buena Vista pulled off an incredible comeback to win in overtime last Friday night. When asked about how he wants his team, Coach Joe Meyer said, “We need to keep playing like we did a week ago; we need to not let up”. He also stated that although everyone carries immense talent on the team, the one key player to watch in the matchup with Mission Bay is junior running back Dorian Richardson. With two major touchdown plays that helped the Longhorns score the win and the cup, Richardson continues to prove himself on the field and will more than likely do so again come Friday night.

Mission Bay on the other hand has not been as lucky this start of the season.  With a bye week, two losses, and both games not scoring a single point, former Kearny coach and current Mission Bay head coach Kenny Nears, is looking to overcome the brutal first few weeks and to turn the season around. He is also counting on their fearless leader, senior quarterback Jaiden Correia, to help put positivity into the mindsets of the players. Corea is famously known for his intense athleticism and even more intense football IQ and is more than prepared to move forward and help guide his team to future victories.

Kick off is at 6pm at Mission Bay High School. The game will also feature Mission Bay's event "Future Bucs Night", where younger children in the surrounding community and their families can come enjoy a football game, activities at halftime, and see what it is like to be a Mission Bay Buccaneer.

Make sure to tune into PPR this Friday and every Friday this fall at 10:30pm to catch scores, highlights, and more from this game and dozens of others from across the county!
