Preview: El Capitan Vaqueros vs Patrick Henry Patriots - KUSI News - San Diego, CA

El Capitan Vaqueros 42, Patrick Henry Patriots 35

Posted: Updated:

Passionate fans on both sides witnessed a treat Friday night, as the El Capitan Vaqueros (2-2) outlasted the Patrick Henry Patriots (0-4) in a high octane thriller which featured three separate ties and three lead changes.

The first quarter got off to a slow start, but that all changed when Patriots quarterback Ethan Gomez fired a pass to wideout Tyjhay Reid, who would break away from his defender and run all the way into the endzone for a 76 yard touchdown. After a Melvin Harris touchdown to take the game to 14-0 in Patrick Henry’s favor, El Cap started to fight back. Quarterback Antonio Olivieri, filling in for an injured Wick Hauser, took a quarterback keeper 13 yards for a score and would later hand the ball off to Star Iuli for a 15 yard touchdown, with the two eventually connecting on one last touchdown drive before halftime. This would give the ball back to the Patriots who proceeded to storm down the field but unfortunately for them, ball hawk Chance Lovato was back to his old tricks again and intercepted a Gomez pass as time expired on the half.

The second half saw both teams make impressive offensive drives and struggle for the upper hand, but Patrick Henry was able to tie the game back up again, with touchdown runs by Harris and Gomez offsetting Iuli’s 20 yard touchdown run, locking the score at 28-28 going into the final quarter. However, this is where El Cap was able to claw ahead for good, as Olivieri was able to find some running room and burst into the endzone for another touchdown. The Vaqueros hammered the final nail into the coffin after turning another Lovato pick into points while holding off the Patriot’s last stand to take the game 42-35, while ensuring Patrick Henry will have to wait at least another week to get their first win.

El Capitan will look to push their winning streak to three games as they face Granite Hills, while Patrick Henry will go for their elusive first win as they square off against Serra,

PREVIEW:Week 4 of high school football is upon us and it promises to bring us even more action and highlights for everyone to enjoy. This week will see the Patrick Henry Patriots (0-3) look to collect their first victory of the season as they square off against the El Capitan Vaqueros (1-2).

El Capitan got their first win of the season last week, defeating Valley Center by a score of 14-13 thanks to strong defensive play by seniors Chance and Chase Lovato as well as an impressive showing by Antonio Olivieri, a tight end by trade who stepped up to play quarterback when his team needed him. With main starter Wick Hauser still nursing a sore shoulder, El Capitan will have Olivieri on standby at the quarterback position where he’ll be complemented by Star Iuli, who scored a touchdown in the winning effort. But their strength will be at the defensive end, where the Patrick Henry offense will have to handle the Lovato brothers prowling around the secondary and a defensive line unit headlined by Jonathan Abbott, who forced a fumble in last week’s win.

The Patriots have had their shares of misfortune, but they are hoping to turn their luck around. Junior quarterback Ethan Gomez received a majority of the snaps last Friday, and he responded by throwing for over 200 yards and rushing over 100 yards, making him a threat with his arm and his legs. He will have Brett Allen available at wideout with Carlito Nothalf and Colin Frye ready to run at the halfback position. An interesting matchup will be Gomez against the Lovato twins, which Patrick Henry must win if they want to be efficient in the passing game.
